We’ll take a practical approach to recognizing and evaluating visual dysfunction after brain injury—and discuss management strategies that primary eye care providers can integrate into clinical practice.

LECTURE: Migraine on the Mind: When the Brain and Eyes Collide

We’ll explore the complex relationship between migraine and the visual system, including how to recognize visual manifestations, think through differential diagnosis, and better manage these patients in eye care.

I’m excited to be heading to Optometry’s Meeting® 2026 in Phoenix and honored to be presenting five sessions spanning some of my favorite topics in clinical practice, education, and interdisciplinary care.

At Optometry’s Meeting® 2026, I’ll be joining Dr. Cecelia Koetting and Dr. Jade Coats for a hands-on workshop focused on one of the most overlooked areas of practice readiness: non-ocular medical emergencies.

While we spend years learning to diagnose and manage eye disease, many of us receive limited training on handling medical emergencies that can occur in our offices at any time.

This session is all about turning uncertainty into confidence through practical preparation, real-world scenarios, and team-based response strategies.

Traumatic brain injury doesn’t just affect how patients think, move, and feel—it can have profound effects on ocular health that are often overlooked.

I’m excited to be presenting “Ocular Health Complications in TBI” at Optometry’s Meeting® 2026 in Phoenix.

As optometrists, we frequently encounter patients with persistent visual complaints following concussion and brain injury. While much attention is given to functional vision disorders, it is equally important to recognize the ocular health findings and complications that can accompany TBI.

In this session, we’ll discuss:
🔹 Ocular health conditions associated with traumatic brain injury
🔹 Retinal, optic nerve, and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of TBI
🔹 Clinical signs that may impact diagnosis, prognosis, and management
🔹 Evidence-based assessment strategies
🔹 The role of interdisciplinary care in optimizing patient outcomes

Brain injury patients often present with complex and multifaceted visual challenges. Understanding the ocular health implications allows us to provide more comprehensive care and identify findings that may otherwise be missed.

What if the biggest threat to evidence-based practice isn’t a lack of research—but how we interpret it?

Evidence-based care requires more than simply reading abstracts and accepting conclusions at face value. As clinicians, we need to understand study design, statistical manipulation, bias, conflicts of interest, publication practices, and the difference between statistical significance and clinical significance.

In this session, we’ll explore:
✅ Common ways research findings can be misrepresented or overstated
✅ How to critically evaluate the quality of evidence
✅ Red flags that should make clinicians pause before changing practice patterns
✅ Practical strategies for becoming a more informed consumer of scientific literature

Our patients deserve care that is guided by both strong evidence and sound clinical judgment.

Honored to be speaking at the American Optometric Association (AOA) Optometry's meeting in Phoenix in just a few weeks!

I’ll be presenting on topics that are especially important to my clinical practice, including the role of vision in patients with concussion, vestibular disorders, and complex neuro-optometric presentations. As our understanding of these patients continues to evolve, collaboration between optometry and the broader rehabilitation team has never been more important.

I’m looking forward to connecting with colleagues from across the country, sharing clinical insights, and learning from the incredible lineup of speakers including a number of my Intrepid Eye Society peers!
