I did a poll a while ago on Facebook and I asked people if they would hire a Doula or not, and if not, why? Below are some of the reasons why people wouldn’t hire a Doula.

-money/too expensive
-birth is too personal for them to have a stranger involved
-bad past experiences with other doulas

When it comes to money I try to be fair when it comes to my pricing, I even include monthly payment options. I tried to be wary about the current market for Doula’s in my area, so I’m not charging too low that it effects others businesses.

I can totally understand having a stranger involved in your birth can be a little weird and not up some peoples alleys. However I would still consider hiring a Doula for maybe not in person support, but to either help you create a birth plan and ensuring that you know all your information/options or even provide postpartum support.

As for the last statement it really makes me sad and mad that there are some bad apples out here in our community that put a bad name for all of us. One individual who took the pole personally messaged me and said that they only interviewed two Doula’s and they told the Doulas that they wanted to get an epidural but the Doula‘s tried to convince them out of the epidural by giving horror stories about epidurals. Mind you, this is during the interview process and these Doulas haven’t even been hired yet. But regardless of that, a Doula should be supportive of any decision the birthing person wants and shouldn’t be giving any judgment towards those choices. It’s THEIR BODY, THEIR BABY, THEIR BIRTH!

🌻Birth has always been viewed as a moment of excruciating pain that you want to get over with. Even in movies and TV shows, you would see the birthing person laying on a hospital bed sweating and screaming as they’re holding their partners hand. With proper communication with your care provider and planning accordingly, anybody can have more options for their birth. 🌻

I’m sorry will never be enough. The fact that this day is still dedicated to a person who’s name should have died long ago is just sickening. The cries of your ancestors carry throughout this land and the american system has failed the indigenous community. You deserve more than a day, a month, or even a year. For generations, indigenous people have suffered and yet they are one of the most kind hearted groups out there. On this day, please do the the indigenous people a favor by educating yourself and to treat each other with kindness.
