🍿 “What is the official state snack of Illinois?” Do you know the answer? I sure didn’t, but you know who does? This little boy!
He used his AAC device to answer a trivia question at the county fair, and he was right! Popcorn!🍿
It was a simple moment, but such an important reminder:
Communication needs opportunity.
We can’t know what someone understands, remembers, thinks, or wants to share if we never give them the chance to tell us.
Sometimes we make assumptions. We simplify the question. We answer for them. Or we don’t ask at all.
But not speaking is not the same as not knowing.
Ask the question.
Give them a way to answer.
Give them enough time.
And most importantly, expect that they have something worth saying.
You might just find out they have something to teach you, like the official state snack of Illinois! ❤️🍿
