Happy 250th, America! 🇺🇸

For the past 10 weeks, we've had the honor of sharing inspiring stories from neighbors whose lives are interwoven with the fabric of our nation. From a Vietnam-era Army veteran who tested ammunition at Aberdeen to a Navy fireman dedicated to serving at the Hines VA for 34 years after the war, each story is a testament to courage and resilience. We’ve heard from a Navy translator on duty during the Watergate burglary, an Air Force medic from a long line of military service who restored a Vietnam-era Army truck, a submarine veteran who pursued his dream of teaching after serving in the Cold War, and many more remarkable individuals.

Today, we celebrate these heroes in our keepsake booklet: "250 Years. Lifetimes of Service." 📖 This week, it will be sent out to every 1776 Senior Care client, family member, and partner across DuPage and Kane Counties.

To the Patriots featured in this booklet: thank you for trusting us with your stories. To the dedicated caregivers: thank you for showing up every shift, every day. And to everyone who has followed along with us: thank you for honoring these incredible individuals.

Here’s to the next 250! 🎉

Tomorrow in 1776, the Continental Congress made a historic decision by voting for independence! 🇺🇸 While we celebrate on July 4th, it was actually July 2nd that John Adams believed would "be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival." He may have been off by two days, but he was spot on about the celebration! 🎉

🌟 Patriot Profile: Harry 🌟

The Korean War is often referred to as America's Forgotten War, but Harry hasn’t forgotten.

In his own words:
"Over 1.5 million men were drafted into military service during the Korean War, and as my 21st birthday drew near, I knew it was only a matter of time before my 'Greetings' letter arrived. Before I was drafted, a buddy and I decided to enjoy ourselves for a little while, so we headed to Daytona Beach for some fun. Just as I expected, my draft letter arrived on August 28, 1951.

For the first six months, I went through basic combat and artillery training at Camp Chaffee in Arkansas, a major training center for the 5th Armored Division. After that, I was sent to Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg, California, as part of Company D, 10th Combat Battalion.

Training was tough and conditions were harsh. On one of the coldest nights of training, I suffered frostbite after marching through the night.

I was sent overseas at midnight on January 1, 1952, serving 21 months in combat in South Korea as a Corporal. I vividly remember one terrifying attack during that time. My unit was fortunate, but a neighboring unit suffered a direct hit with many casualties while we found shelter in our bunker.

I also recall the Armistice negotiations and the day I finally returned home. After coming back, I met my wife, raised a family, and became part of a successful landscaping business. My military service taught me always to be prepared for emergencies and to do my best no matter the job.

Family, church, and volunteer work have always been important to me, and I remain deeply thankful for my loved ones. These days, I need more help getting through each day. My caregiver Marlon from 1776 has become more than just someone who assists me; he’s become a true companion. We love spending time together following our favorite sports teams.

Thank you, Harry, for your service in a war too few remember — and to Marlon for the companionship that enriches Harry's days!

This week in 1776: The delegates in Philadelphia were just days away from the most crucial vote of their lives. 🌞🔥 With no air conditioning and uncertainty hanging in the air, some had quietly warned their wives that a negative outcome could lead to charges of treason.

Sometimes, the most American thing you can do is show up scared and vote anyway. 🇺🇸🗳️

🇺🇸 Patriot Profile: Larry 🇺🇸

Life in a war zone is something most of us can't even begin to imagine. But for many Vietnam War veterans, it was a daily reality. Meet Larry, a brave veteran who humbly shares his story.

"At just 19 years old, I enlisted in the Army because I felt it was my duty to serve. After basic training, I went to Monterey, California, for medical training—my first real glimpse into the harsh realities of war as I cared for wounded soldiers returning home. Little did I know, this would foreshadow my own experiences.

After a year at the hospital in Monterey, I received orders to deploy to Vietnam. Serving with the 82nd Airborne Division, 3rd Battalion, Charlie Company, as a combat medic during search-and-destroy missions was intense. We operated deep in the jungles, often under heavy enemy fire. My job was to find and stabilize wounded soldiers quickly, doing everything possible to save lives amid combat.

During my first tour, I was injured by shrapnel in an attack and sent back home to recover. But after healing, I returned to Vietnam for a second tour and continued my work as a medic in the jungles.

In April 1970, I was honored with the Combat Medic Badge for serving under active enemy fire and awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service and acts of valor.

After three years of service, I returned home and later met my wife while working at US Air. We built careers together for 35 years while raising our family.

In 2023, my daughter joined me on an Honor Flight trip. Finally, after all those years since Vietnam, I received the welcome home I never got when I returned from the war.

Today, I'm grateful for the support of my caregiver, Marlon, from 1776 Senior Care. He's been with me for many years and feels like family. We share stories and enjoy our time together."

Larry's story exemplifies courage, sacrifice, resilience, and finally—recognition. Thank you for your service, Larry! We're honored to be part of your journey.
