What do cholesterol numbers mean?

A lipid panel is a blood test to measure your cholesterol levels. Cholesterol levels are influenced by many factors: genetic, dietary, other medication you may be taking, liver health and drinking alcohol. Not everyone with high cholesterol needs medication, and there are some over the counter supplements that help keeping it in check too. There are 4 types, but the evaluation of risk and the decision of who needs medicine, what type, and how much is a true art.

A. Total cholesterol, should be bellow 200 points
B. LDL (low density cholesterol, or “bad”) should be bellow 100
C. VLDL (very low density cholesterol, or “ very bad”) should be bellow 35
D. HDL (high density cholesterol, or “good”) should be above 40 males, above 50 females

Why is important to have a yearly physical exam?

Today health is about prevention NOT treatment. A yearly physical is your chance to make sure you're in good health, and to discuss any concerns you have with your doctor. Annual physicals can uncover warning signs before any symptoms develop, and should provide a plan to address any abnormal results. The examination should include a comprehensive blood panel which checks your kidneys, liver, cholesterol levels, and blood count, as well as other indexes which are appropriate for your personal/ family medical history.
This visit is FREE in most health plans. That gives you a hint of how important it is in preventing disease before it even develops!

A question I frequently get asked is: “should I take vitamins, and if so which one is good for me?”

The answer needs to be customized for each patient as it depends of the reason of a vitamin deficiency. Firstly, you may not get enough of the essential vitamins daily due to diet, preparation/cooking style, or just food quality. Secondly, you may have a malabsorption of specific vitamins which can be due to genetics, surgery or gut health.

During your yearly physical examination we actually test your blood for the level of a few vitamins (D, B12 and folate). If you have reason to suspect a vitamin deficiency come to the office to and we can request a custom panel of vitamin levels, which most insurances will cover. Once we have diagnosed and identified a deficiency we can treat it by recommending specific vitamins to be supplemented.

The important part is to know what’s d how much exactly you need to take, as there is really no “ one size fits all“ in medicine

The new location is only 1.2miles (2 minutes) away, the next exit on 208 North (exit on Maple Avenue). I know you will love the new professional building, with ample parking, right off the highway and a modern and spacious elevator to our third floor location. The new space has been totally renovated and is luxurious and practical.
