The alarm was false. The anxiety was real.

That's hypervigilance: a smoke alarm that goes off for toast, and a body that evacuates the building every time. A day where nothing happened can still leave you wrecked, and it's hard to explain to anyone, including yourself.

If anxiety is running the show, getting back in charge is what DBT is built for. A free 15-minute consult is a place to start.

Turn the Mind runs a free, ongoing support group for parents navigating their child's gender identity and transition.

Most of the parents in it are somewhere in the middle of adjusting, and that's the point of the room. The difficult part needs somewhere to go that isn't your child and isn't nowhere.

Open enrollment, no cost, facilitated by Dr. Laura Richardson. If you want to come, message us and we'll tell you when it next meets.

The exact words:
"I want to keep talking about this, and I'm at the edge of what I can do well right now. I'm going to stop and come back to it tomorrow."

In DBT this is FAST, the skill set for keeping your self-respect intact in a hard conversation. Be fair, no apologies, stick to your values, be truthful. Most people lose self-respect in an argument two ways, either by apologizing for having a limit at all or by inventing a reason that isn't the real one. This sentence does neither. You've named that you care, you've named your limit, and you've given a time to return. That last part is what keeps it from landing as a shutdown.

You are doing the best you can in the moment, and you can also learn the words that make the moment go differently.

Send this to someone who needs it. If setting limits like this is the part that keeps not working, book a free 15-minute consult and we'll figure out together whether we're the right fit.

One of the most common things we hear from LGBTQIA+ clients is that the first several sessions somewhere else went to educating the therapist.

That's time you paid for, spent on labor you didn't sign up for.

Affirming care is more than the absence of harm. It means your identity is context, and your actual reason for coming is the subject. Your name and pronouns are honored from intake forward, not negotiated in session three.

Most clients tell us the difference shows up early, in how little they have to explain before the work starts.

Book a free 15-minute consult and we'll figure out together whether we're the right fit. Link to our LGBTQIA+ therapy page in the first comment.

"Take a deep breath" is advice that usually arrives without the mechanics. Here they are:
your heart rate rises a little on the inhale and drops a little on the exhale. So when you're panicking and pulling in big gulps of air, your body can read that as more alarm, not less.

Paced breathing flips it. You slow everything down and make the exhale longer than the inhale, in for a count of four, out for six or eight, for a few minutes. The exact numbers matter less than the ratio: any count works, as long as the out-breath is longer than the in-breath.

In DBT it's one of the TIPP skills, built for the moments when emotion is moving faster than thought and the talking-yourself-down tools are out of reach. It won't erase what you're feeling. Most clients tell us it brings the intensity down a notch, enough to reach for the rest of their skills.

If your emotions tend to go from zero to a hundred and you want concrete tools for that, this is exactly what teaches. We're a DBT and trauma therapy practice in Glen Rock, NJ. Book a free 15-minute consult and we'll figure out together whether we're the right fit.

Anxiety or intuition, and how to tell the difference.

Both show up as the same feeling in your chest. That's not a failure of self-awareness, it's why people spend years second-guessing themselves.

The difference is what happens when the urgency drops. Anxiety needs the alarm to stay on. Intuition doesn't. Intuition tells you something once and then waits.

This is one of the distinctions DBT skills training makes concrete rather than abstract.

Functional freeze is when you're still doing everything and feeling almost nothing. The work gets done. You're not in it.

It's a shutdown state, not a discipline problem, and the pressure you've been putting on yourself has been aimed at the wrong target.

If this is where you've been living, it's treatable.

Book a free 15-minute consult.
We'll figure out together whether this is what's going on.

Toxic positivity says "just think happy thoughts."
DBT says "check if your thoughts match reality."
Huge difference. 🧠

Check the Facts is one of the most underrated skills in Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
It's not about forcing positivity, it's about accuracy.

Tires screeching. Binder pages flying. Skills entering real life. When you realize the skills aren't supposed to stay in the binder.

Because knowing a skill and using one are two different things. You can memorize every worksheet and still go blank mid-argument. That's not failure, that's a nervous system under stress.

Skills coaching is what makes the turn: a quick call or text with your therapist in the actual moment, so skills stop living on the page and start living in your life.

No coaching in your DBT program? You're missing the exit. Link in bio. 💙
