What can regular movement do as we age? More than most people have been told.

It is the most effective way we know to prevent falls. It builds bone and muscle at any age, including in your 80s and 90s. It is the first-line recommended treatment for arthritis, ahead of medication. And it improves sleep, mood, and memory in ways that are measurable, not just hopeful. The encouraging part: starting small counts. A ten-minute walk after dinner and a few chair stands each day are a real beginning.

On Thursday, July 16, Dr. Arlene Lazaro, DO will give a free talk at the Banner Olive Branch Senior Center in Sun City: The Power of Movement. She'll walk through what the research shows in plain language and demonstrate simple exercises you can do safely at home.

Dr. Lazaro is board-certified in physical medicine & rehabilitation, pain medicine, and lifestyle medicine. She'll stay after the talk to answer questions for as long as you have them.

Thursday, July 16, 10-11 am

May is Arthritis Awareness Month β€” a condition that quietly affects the way millions of people live every single day.

Over 53 million Americans are living with arthritis. While the joint changes are real, lifestyle factors significantly influence pain levels, progression, and quality of life.

πŸ”¬ Diet matters. A Mediterranean-style diet β€” rich in fish, olive oil, vegetables, and whole grains β€” is the only dietary pattern recommended by the American College of Rheumatology for arthritis. It reduces inflammation and improves pain.

😴 Sleep matters. Poor sleep activates inflammatory pathways and increases pain sensitivity β€” and pain, in turn, worsens sleep. Breaking this cycle can meaningfully reduce symptoms.

πŸ’ͺ Movement reduces pain. Regular physical activity β€” walking, swimming, strengthening exercises β€” reduces pain and improves function. Low-impact exercise does not accelerate joint damage. The most important thing is to stay active.

βš–οΈ Weight management protects joints. Every pound lost reduces about four pounds of load on the knee. Losing just 5–10% of body weight can meaningfully reduce pain and improve function.

🦴 Strength supports joints. Weakness around an arthritic joint contributes to pain. Even low-intensity strengthening exercises can improve function and are recommended as part of arthritis care.

Arthritis is complex and every person’s experience with it is different. But the conversation around it deserves to go beyond symptom management.

We’ll be sharing more throughout the month.

Never Miss a Monday. πŸ’ͺ

Exercise is one of the most powerful tools in medicine
and the research backs it up.

Regular movement has been shown to:

βœ… Reduce chronic pain as effectively as some medications
βœ… Improve sleep quality and duration
βœ… Lower blood pressure and improve heart health
βœ… Support healthy weight and body composition
βœ… Reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression
βœ… Boost focus, memory, and mental clarity

✨Add years to your life β€” and life to your years

The best workout is the one you actually do.

Start where you are.

Chronic pain is one of the most complex conditions in medicine β€” and the research is increasingly clear that it rarely has a single cause.

These are five biological drivers we assess at KAYA for every chronic pain patient. In most cases, more than one is active and addressable.

This whole-person framework is at the heart of everything we do β€” because lasting relief comes from understanding the full picture, not just managing the symptom.

Swipe through. Save this. Send it to someone who has been living with pain and looking for real answers.
