Let’s Talk Cardio & Parkinson’s

When it comes to Parkinson’s exercise guidelines, aerobic exercise is one of the big four!

The current recommendations encourage people with Parkinson’s to work toward 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity, 3x/week.

In our hour-long classes, our goal is to help you check multiple boxes in one workout - strength, balance, agility, multitasking, flexibility AND aerobic exercise.

So after our warm-up, we want to get that heart rate UP! ⬆️

Why does cardio matter?

For everyone, regular aerobic exercise can help:
•Improve endurance 🏃‍♂️
•Support heart health ❤️
•Support brain health and cognitive function 🧠
•Improve sleep 😴
•Support mood 😁
•Improve energy ⚡️

And for people living with Parkinson’s, aerobic exercise can also help improve fitness, mobility, gait and balance, while supporting overall quality of life.

Some of the cardio exercise we incorporate into class include:
•Stepping 👣
•Seated cardio 🪑
•Boxing 🥊
•HIIT 🔥
•Rhythm-based movement 🎶
Anything that gets you breathing harder and your heart pumping.

Our goal is to help you get your exercise in, while making it purposeful, challenging and, hopefully - a little fun. 😊 Let us help you cross one exercise session off your to do list this week!

Stretching and mobility matter in Parkinson’s.

Stiffness and changes in posture can make it harder to move through a full range of motion, so we want to maintain as much mobility as possible and practice using it during functional movement.

So, how do we do this? 🤷‍♀️

One thing we like to incorporate is a dynamic warm-up.

The goal isn’t simply to “stretch.” A good dynamic warm-up helps prepare the tissues for movement and primes the nervous system for exercise.

That’s why we start each class with dynamic movement designed to prepare the body 💪 and brain 🧠 for what’s ahead.

Our warm-ups target:

→ All major muscle groups
→ Movement through all three planes of motion
→ Large-amplitude movements
→ Balance and coordination challenges

We intentionally encourage large amplitude movement from the very beginning of class. This gives us an opportunity to work through each person’s available range of motion while reinforcing bigger, more purposeful movement patterns and strengthening through that range.

And that added balance challenge is just a perk. 😉 We love a bang-for-your-buck exercise! Why work on just one thing when we can challenge several systems at once?

The goal of our warm-up is to do more than just get you warm. It should prepare you to move well. 👏

Stay tuned as we dive deeper into Parkinson’s exercise prescription and how we incorporate each piece into our classes!

If you or someone you love has Parkinson’s, you’ve probably heard:
“Stay active.”

But what does that actually mean?

It can feel overwhelming trying to figure out:
What exercises are safe?
What actually helps?
Where do you even start?

Here’s the truth:

The right kind of exercise can make a huge difference.

That’s why our classes focus on:
→ Balance and gait training
→ Strength and resistance work
→ Task-specific and functional movement

Why?

Because Parkinson’s affects how the brain communicates with the body—especially for movement size, speed, and coordination.

That means we don’t just “work out”…

We train the nervous system.

Every class is built around helping you move better in your everyday life.

I’ll be breaking each of these down in upcoming posts so you know why these are important
