A: My favorite part of being a nurse has always been treating patients like people and becoming someone they want to talk to. Hospice gives me the opportunity to slow down, listen, and really get to know the person I am caring for. Sometimes the most meaningful part of a visit is not the clinical task, but the conversation, the trust, and the relationship that develops. I want patients and families to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and knowing they are being cared for as a whole person.

A: For me, spiritual care often begins with companionship. It means being willing to walk alongside someone, listen to their story, share in meaningful conversation, and simply be present when words are not needed. We all have a need for connection, especially during times of illness, grief, and uncertainty. Sometimes my role is to help someone explore what gives their life meaning, and sometimes it is simply to sit quietly beside them. No one should have to feel alone at the end of life, regardless of their religious beliefs.

A: I wish families knew that hospice offers much more than medical care. It is a whole team of people working together to support both patients and families. Volunteers can provide companionship, practical help, or simply a caring presence. Hospice support also continues after a loved one dies through bereavement outreach, resources, education, and connections to additional grief support when needed. Families are often surprised to learn just how much support is available to them throughout the hospice journey and even after it ends.

What does hospice nursing support really look like?

Hospice nurses are not typically in the home around the clock. During visits, they assess symptoms, monitor changes, review medications, coordinate care, and help families understand what to expect.

An important part of hospice nursing is teaching family caregivers how to give medications, recognize changes, provide comfort, and know when to call for help.

And families are not on their own between visits. A hospice nurse is available 24/7 to answer questions, provide guidance, and make a visit when symptoms or a change in condition requires additional support.

Hospice care is about helping families feel prepared, supported, and confident caring for someone they love.

A: As a hospice CNA, I have the privilege of spending very personal, hands-on time with patients. That means I can help them feel comfortable, clean, cared for, and treated with dignity. I also get to know them well enough to notice small changes in how they are feeling or functioning and share those changes with the rest of the hospice team. Sometimes the biggest difference is simply being a familiar, trusted face for the patient and giving families reassurance that their loved one is being cared for with compassion and respect.

A: Families are often surprised to learn that chaplain support is not just for people who are religious. We are here to support whatever gives a person meaning, comfort, hope, or peace. That may include prayer or faith traditions, but it may also be conversation, music, memories, relationships, or simply having someone present who will listen. Chaplain support is also available to family members, not just the patient. My role is to meet people where they are and offer support in a way that feels meaningful to them.

A: Hospice social work goes far beyond emotional support. I help patients and families understand hospice, know what to expect, and connect with resources such as food assistance, counseling, Medicaid, Veterans benefits, advance directives, and funeral planning.

Sometimes support is practical, and sometimes it simply means sitting quietly with someone or offering companionship. My goal is always to meet each patient and family where they are and tailor my support to what matters most to them. It is truly an honor to walk alongside families during such a personal time.

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month.

We recognize the women and families affected by ovarian, uterine, cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers, and the challenges that can come with advanced disease.
