Memorial Day wasn't always observed on the last Monday of May. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. The date was chosen because it wasn't the anniversary of any particular battle, allowing flowers to be in bloom nationwide. It became a federal holiday in 1971 when the observance was moved to create a three-day weekend.
