September is Sepsis awareness month. Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection. It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have triggers a chain reaction throughout your body. Most cases of sepsis start before a patient goes to the hospital. Infections that lead to sepsis most often start in the lung, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.

I’d like to share a win for today. I had a client who was prescribed a highly specialized antibiotic which would cost the patient $340 due to being a non-covered med. I was about to start working on the prior authorization to get it covered through insurance when I decided to look for a Good Rx coupon. I found a coupon making the total cost of the medication $40. Since it was Friday afternoon and a prior auth would have taken a minimum of 48hrs, the client decided it was best to use the Good Rx coupon rather than wait for insurance approval. She was able to start her medication right away and prevent the infection from getting worse and possibly landing her in the hospital.
