Handling Stress

Certain lifestyle habits can help develop psychological flexibility; this is the ability of the brain to change how it thinks about a stressful situation. This flexibility allows your brain to identify solutions, which then shapes resilience. In a recent study of 400 college students, researchers found that those who ate a healthy breakfast 5 or more times a week, exercised at least 20 minutes a day and slept at least 6 hours a night were better equipped to handle stress. Habits such as frequently eating fast food, sleeping poorly or using ma*****na were associated with less resilience.

Symptoms Of Heart Failure

Heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood effectively. It can't pump the nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood to where it's needed in the body because of changes in the heart muscle. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, fatigue and weakness, swelling caused by fluid retention (typically in the legs, ankles and feet), persistent cough or wheezing, sudden weight gain due to fluid buildup, and irregular or rapid heartbeat. Treatments may include lifestyle modifications, medication, medical devices or surgery. Treatment can significantly improve longevity and quality of life.

Tips To Preserve Memory

Physical exercise is one of the best things you can do to preserve memory. Consistent aerobic activity increases the size of your hippocampus, the part of the brain linked with verbal memory and learning. Eat a Mediterranean or MIND diet, rich in healthy fats, vegetables and fish. Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. Engage in new, challenging activities to stimulate your brain, such as learning a new language or playing a musical instrument. Stay socially connected; interaction with family and friends stimulates attention and memory. Keep your cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure in the normal range.

Stay Safe In The Heat

Older adults may have a tougher time dealing with the heat. Stay hydrated; drink water or other non-alcoholic/non-caffeinated beverages regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. Limit outdoor activities or chores during the hottest part of the day. If your home is not cooled, try to spend time in places that are air-conditioned, such as shopping malls, libraries or at a friend's home. If you need help getting to a cooler place, ask a friend or relative or take a taxi. Don't stand outside waiting for a bus. If you experience headache, dizziness, confusion or nausea, seek medical attention to see if you require treatment for a heat-related illness.

Eating Times May Affect Weight

Developing two simple habits may help maintain lower weight. Researchers analyzed about 7,000 adults ages 40 to 65 and found that fasting longer overnight and eating breakfast earlier were associated with lower BMI. This means having an early dinner and an early breakfast with no eating between those two meals. The target was finishing dinner by about 7:30 or 8 p.m. and then having breakfast around 8 a.m., thereby having a consistent overnight fast of about 12 hours. They also found that skipping breakfast, even though it meant a longer fast, was not as beneficial as eating breakfast earlier.

Music & Anxiety

A new study found that when music is paired with auditory beat stimulation (ABS), people with anxiety who listened to it significantly reduced their symptoms. Researchers witnessed a link between how much time they spent listening and their mood. Participants who spent as little as 24 minutes listening experienced the strongest overall reduction in anxiety. Those who listened for only 12 minutes didn't see as much improvement. Participants also had a reduction in distress, jitteriness and irritability and experienced more emotional balance overall. Participants were already on anti-anxiety medication, so listening to ABS music might be a good adjunct therapy.
