🔥 Ice or Heat for Back Pain? 🧊
It depends on what your body needs. There isn’t an one-size-fits-all answer.

Cold is better overall for swelling and inflammation. Cold narrows blood vessels, which slows blood flow and reduces swelling. Heat is better for muscle relaxation and circulation by opening blood vessels, boosting blood circulation to relax tight muscles and knots.

🧊 Choose ice for a fresh sprain/strain, bump, bruise, or swelling. Use ice especially during the first 48 to 72 hours. Cold may help reduce pain and discomfort.
How: Wrap a cold pack in a thin towel and apply it for 15 to 20 minutes over the painful area. Never place ice directly on your skin or use it for prolonged periods.

🔥 Choose heat for tight muscles, stiffness, chronic aches, old injuries, or before gentle stretching or activity. In many cases of acute or subacute low-back pain, superficial heat may provide short-term relief and improve function.
How: Use a heating pad, warm compress, heat wrap, or warm shower for 15 to 20 minutes. Avoid heat on new swelling because it may worsen inflammation. DO NOT SLEEP WITH HEAT ON YOUR BACK OVERNIGHT. This may result in excessive inflammation and a lot more pain.

đź’ˇ The takeaway: For uncomplicated low-back pain, heat may be a reasonable first option for short-term relief. If cold feels better, it can also be used for comfort. Stay gently active as tolerated rather than relying on prolonged bed rest.

If ice or heat doesn't resolve your neck or back pain in a few days, then call the office and schedule an appointment. 928-425-3207

🚨 Seek medical care for severe or worsening pain, leg weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or other concerning symptoms. When in doubt, have your back assessed rather than guessing at the cause.

Today, September 10 is World Su***de Prevention Day. This an annual international observance dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and taking collective action to prevent su***de worldwide. This day serves as a critical reminder that su***de is preventable and that support is always available.

This is a topic that has been important to my family for over 45 years. When I first experienced su***de in my family, I did know what the word meant. I was too young. . I’m glad that there is more awareness and an effort to prevent any family from experiencing what we have.

At my office, we are collecting change to help fund a scholarship in memory of a family friend who we lost at an early age.

Su***de does not just affect the person, but everyone that is touched by their life.

Common question: Can i get adjusted if my neck is fused?

Answer: We do not adjust over fused vertebrae. We can gently adjust (no high velocity/no “popping”) above or below the fusion. We can use the Activator, for example. The adjacent joints compensate for the fusion. We adjust there to relieve pain ands to prevent premature wearing.

Other options: Acupuncture or massage therapy are other options to treat around spinal fusions.

On a scale of 1 to 10… how does your back feel right now? 🤔 if you’re hitting a 5 or higher, this is your sign to get off your chair, stretch, and book an appointment - for chiropractic, acupuncture, or massage .

Try the 30/30 rule today… for every minute of sitting, stand up or stretch for at least 30 seconds. Drop a 👍 in the comments if you are going to try this today!!
