She had no pain. No discharge. No unusual changes during breast self-exams. Nothing to suggest anything was wrong.

But on February 23, Vicki Halcumb had a routine screening mammogram that revealed a possible abnormality.

What followed were a few short months of ultrasounds, biopsies, and surgeries. By August 18, those procedures were behind her. On August 23, pathology results brought wonderful news: Vicki was cancer-free.

“It saved my life,” Vicki says of her screening mammogram.

About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. And breast cancer doesn't always come with warning signs. Screening mammograms can detect cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment is more likely to be successful.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Vicki's story is an important reminder: Don't wait for symptoms to take screening seriously.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷 The City of Brookings is proud to recognize March 2026 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and honor those who have lost their lives, support those in treatment, and celebrate survivors, families, and advocates.

Congratulations to Kris Beem, CHN's August 2026 Service Excellence Superstar!

When a woman fell across the street from the clinic and was unable to get up, Kris didn't hesitate to help. She went outside, assisted the woman into a wheelchair, and brought her into the clinic, where she was able to see a provider that same day.

It's just one example of the kindness, compassion, and willingness to go the extra mile that make Kris so deserving of this recognition.
