From August 25–27, 1774, North Carolina made history when the First Provincial Congress met in New Bern. It was the first gathering anywhere in the Thirteen Colonies held in open defiance of British orders. The delegates appointed three men to represent North Carolina at the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia: William Hooper (New Hanover County), Joseph Hewes (Edenton), Richard Caswell (Chatham County).
