Anxiety in children and adolescents does not always sound like, “I’m worried.”

It may look like irritability before school, repeated stomachaches, difficulty sleeping, perfectionism, avoiding activities they once enjoyed or needing frequent reassurance.

Because these behaviors can resemble defiance, a lack of motivation or physical illness, it is important to consider the pattern rather than one isolated moment. When does it happen? What situations seem to trigger it? How long has it continued? Is it interfering with school, relationships or everyday activities?

Children do not need to reach a crisis before receiving support. Early assessment can help families better understand what is happening and identify strategies that meet the child’s individual needs.

The Center of Hope for Behavioral Health provides individualized behavioral health care for children and families throughout Middle Tennessee. Call 615-756-4898 or visit centerofhopebh.org.

Some children use nearly all of their emotional energy getting through the school day.

They are following instructions, managing transitions, navigating friendships and trying to meet expectations. By the time they arrive home, even a small request can feel overwhelming.

This is sometimes described as an after-school emotional release. It does not mean a child had a bad day or is intentionally misbehaving. Often, home is simply where they feel safe enough to stop holding everything together.

A supportive transition may include a snack, movement, quiet time or a few minutes without questions. Once the child has had an opportunity to regulate, conversation and responsibilities may feel more manageable.

If intense reactions are frequent, persistent or interfering with daily life, a behavioral health professional can help your family better understand what your child may be experiencing.

A child’s behavior often communicates something they do not yet have the words to explain.

Withdrawal may mean they feel overwhelmed. Anger may be protecting fear or embarrassment. Refusing to participate may reflect anxiety, uncertainty or a need for more support.

Looking beyond the behavior does not mean ignoring boundaries. It means responding to the need while still helping the child develop healthier ways to express it.

A calm question can be a powerful place to begin: “What is making this feel difficult right now?”

A hard beginning does not predict the whole school year.

The first days of a new routine can require children to manage unfamiliar classrooms, changing expectations, new relationships and long periods of concentration. By the time they return home, they may have very little energy left for regulating their emotions.

That can look like tears, frustration, exhaustion or behavior that seems out of character.

Give the transition time. Create room for rest. Respond to difficult moments with curiosity before assuming something has gone wrong.

Some children settle as the routine becomes familiar. Others may need additional support, and seeking that support is not a sign that anyone has failed.

If your child’s struggle continues or begins interfering with school, sleep, relationships or daily life, the Center of Hope for Behavioral Health is here. Call 615-756-4898 or visit centerofhopebh.org.

When an adolescent says, “I’m fine,” it can be difficult to know whether to keep asking questions or give them space.

The answer may be a little of both.

Returning to school can bring changes in friendships, social pressure, academic expectations and worries about belonging. Adolescents may not be ready to explain those experiences the moment they walk through the door.

Continue creating opportunities for connection without turning every check-in into an interrogation. A quiet car ride, a favorite snack or simply sitting nearby can communicate, “I am here when you are ready.”

You do not need to force the conversation to keep the door open.

If your teen could benefit from a safe, supportive place to process what they are experiencing, call the Center of Hope for Behavioral Health at 615-756-4898 or visit centerofhopebh.org.

You can be the one creating stability and still feel overwhelmed.

As families return to school-year routines, caregivers are often managing far more than what appears on the calendar. There are forms to complete, schedules to coordinate, expenses to cover and children who may need extra emotional reassurance through the transition.

Meanwhile, the caregiver is expected to remain calm, organized and available.

If you are carrying more than usual this season, your feelings matter, too. You do not have to reach a breaking point before seeking support. Taking care of your mental health can help you remain present for the people who depend on you, but you are also worthy of care simply because you are a person who needs it.

The Center of Hope for Behavioral Health offers personalized support for adults, children and families throughout Middle Tennessee.

A new routine can be a fresh start and still feel hard.

For some children, returning to school brings excitement. For others, it may bring worry about new teachers, changing friendships, academic expectations or being away from home again.

Those feelings may not arrive as a clear conversation. They can look like irritability, trouble sleeping, stomachaches, withdrawal or needing more reassurance than usual.

Before assuming a child is simply “acting out,” pause and ask what the behavior may be communicating. A calm check-in can remind them that they are safe, supported and not expected to manage every feeling alone.

If the transition feels bigger than your family can carry right now, support is available. Call the Center of Hope for Behavioral Health at 615-756-4898 or visit centerofhopebh.org to request a child appointment.
