Meet David B., a City of Hope Phoenix transportation driver whose impact reaches far beyond the miles he travels.

After retiring, David found himself restless and searching for a new sense of purpose. His wife, who has worked at City of Hope for more than 15 years, encouraged him to consider joining the transportation team. Although he was hesitant at first, David now calls it “one of the best decisions of my life.”

Every day, David helps patients and their families travel to and from cancer treatment. But his role is about much more than transportation.

“In that front seat, you wear many hats,” he said. “You are a listener, a confidant and an advocate, all at the same time.”

David has celebrated with patients who received the news that their cancer was in remission and listened as families shared moments of hope and relief. He has also offered a compassionate presence during some of life’s most difficult moments.

“Some of the best people I’ve ever known have sat in my car,” he said. “I am deeply grateful for both the joy and the pain and for the trust patients place in me.”

Through the countless conversations and miles they have shared, David says patients have taught him the importance of hope, faith, community and appreciating each day. His advice to anyone considering becoming a driver is simple: “Do it. Get involved with your community and connect with people. Being a driver at City of Hope is a profoundly unique privilege.”

Outside of work, David is an avid traveler and outdoor enthusiast who finds peace and perspective in nature. He is also a former scratch golfer and has served as CEO of several companies but today, he is especially proud to be part of a compassionate transportation team that helps make every patient’s journey a little easier.

David, thank you for reminding us that exceptional cancer care can begin before a patient ever walks through our doors.

As a U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Officer, Dan T. had faced difficult missions before. But nothing prepared him for a diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver.

Dan and his wife, Jessica — both military veterans — knew they wanted the most advanced care possible. Following a highly complex surgery to remove cancer from both his colon and liver, Dan is now thriving.

Today, his greatest role isn't in uniform. It's being a dad to his daughter, Evelyn Hope, and celebrating the moments that matter most.

When Ken Herich was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, the outlook was devastating. The cancer had spread to his bones, lungs and abdomen, and multiple treatments had failed. He was told there were no more options.

But Ken wasn't ready to give up.

At City of Hope, he became one of the first patients to receive tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy, a groundbreaking treatment that uses a patient's own immune cells to fight cancer. What followed was a challenging journey filled with determination, hope and trust in his care team.

Today, Ken's scans show no evidence of disease. He's back on the ski slopes, hiking trails and golf course — doing the things he loves most.

A lingering cough changed everything for Heather.

As a busy mom of two, Heather initially thought she had a cold that simply wouldn’t go away. She kept moving through work, family life and her sons’ baseball games. But as the months passed and her symptoms worsened, what she thought might be pneumonia turned out to be stage IV lung cancer.

Through her network, Heather connected with City of Hope, where specialists reviewed her case and identified a genetic mutation. Her care team then developed a personalized lung cancer treatment plan that included the FDA-approved targeted therapy Rybrevant.

“We’re going to be aggressive, and we’re going to be swift. Are you with me?” Heather recalled her oncologist asking.

“And I said yes.”

Today, Heather continues treatment while embracing the life she loves—working, cheering on her sons and being present for the moments that matter most.

This World Lung Cancer Day, Heather is sharing her story to challenge common assumptions about the disease. Lung cancer doesn’t always look the way people expect. It can affect younger adults and people without typical risk factors.

“Stage IV does not mean you are terminally ill,” Heather said of her own experience. “Stay on the path, because the longer you stay with it, the more advancements there will be.”

Heather’s story is a powerful reminder to pay attention when symptoms persist, advocate for answers and hold on to hope.

Navigating cancer treatment is one chapter, but living beyond it is another. Nicole Schulz, like so many cancer survivors, knows this reality firsthand.

After a leukemia diagnosis as a high school freshman, she became one of nearly 19 million people living with the lasting impact of cancer. As Nicole began life after treatment, the challenges continued. After her first of two bone marrow transplants, she was diagnosed with avascular necrosis. Nicole also lives with chronic graft-versus-host disease, along with PTSD and anxiety.

Despite these struggles, she has found solace. She says her strength comes not just from within, but also from the support she receives at City of Hope.

“It's not over when you beat cancer,” says Nicole. “It’s a lot of ups and downs, and the challenge when you're in the valleys is to remember to keep climbing back up to those peaks.”

At age 36, Onjalai Brown faced divorce, job loss, eviction and a breast cancer diagnosis. All in a single year.

It was one of the most difficult chapters of her life and ultimately, the beginning of a new purpose.

“My greatest asset is hope. And it’s priceless.”

Onjalai came to City of Hope Cancer Center Phoenix for a second opinion where she found a care team committed to supporting her every step of the way.

Today, cancer-free, Onjalai lives with intention and a guiding question: “Who am I blessing today?”

Sidney Raskind’s world turned upside down in 2024. After he and his wife, Kelsie, lost their unborn daughter to a rare birth defect, genetic testing revealed their daughter had a CTNNA1 gene deletion. That discovery led Sidney to get tested himself; he learned he carried the same mutation, putting him at high risk for diffuse gastric cancer.

Sidney didn’t have symptoms, but acting on advice from a genetic counselor, he went to City of Hope for an endoscopy. The results were life-changing: early-stage diffuse gastric cancer. “It all leads back to losing my daughter,” Sidney shared. “Because of the gene deletion found in her DNA, I was able to find out I had cancer and do something about it.”

Sidney’s care team at City of Hope included experts in gastric cancer genetics and robotic surgery. From there, Sidney underwent a total gastrectomy last July. The surgery removed his stomach and reconnected his esophagus to his small intestine, allowing him to recover quickly and learn new ways to eat and drink.

Today, Sidney is cancer-free and feeling good. He’s adapted to life without a stomach and continues to share his journey with millions of followers on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

Sidney has helped raise $75,000+ for gastric cancer research, donating a significant portion to City of Hope. He encourages others to learn their family history and consider genetic testing, especially if there’s a history of cancer.

Our therapy dogs from Mutts On A Mission have a remarkable way of turning ordinary moments into unforgettable ones. They help ease nerves before appointments, offer comfort during difficult days and bring joy to patients, families and staff alike.

It's a beautiful reminder that hope can show up in many forms and sometimes, it has four paws.

Dr. Sekulic operates at the cutting edge of advanced immunotherapies and genomic profiling, his philosophy as a dermatologist remains grounded in a foundational public health reality: melanoma is largely preventable, and the best defense is daily sun safety.

In a region like Phoenix, where the UV index frequently hits extreme levels, the relationship between ultraviolet (UV) exposure and genetic mutation is an immediate, daily hazard.

“Sun protection is key to skin cancer prevention. Implementing simple daily protections - like choosing to be under shade when possible, wearing long sleeves, sunscreen, and a hat - helps your skin stay healthy in the Arizona desert sun,” said Aleksandar Sekulic, MD, PhD, Physician-in-Chief, TGen, and director of dermatology and translational research, City of Hope Cancer Center Phoenix.

As a researcher, Dr. Sekulic sees the micro-level devastation that UV radiation inflicts: it acts as an environmental mutagen, physically changing DNA strands and leaving behind errors that can transition into tumors years down the road. This is why his vision for the new cutaneous oncology program at City of Hope Phoenix integrates rigorous community prevention alongside advanced cancer care.

We live in a truly transformational era of medicine. Through genomic testing, we can look at your unique DNA to identify risks and catch cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages. It is the ultimate tool for prevention.

But for those currently in the fight, the "science of safety" becomes very practical. As the experts at City of Hope and TGen remind us, cancer treatments like chemotherapy can make your body more sensitive to the environment.
