Mr. Billy Young McClanahan, age 94, of Alexandria, TN, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Mr. McClanahan was born June 9, 1932 in Grant, TN, a son of the late David Dorris McClanahan, Sr, and Sarah Aline Young McClanahan. He married Peggy Granstaff McClanahan on August 16, 1958 and she preceded him in death on January 23, 2013. Mr. McClanahan was also preceded in death by Brothers; James Oscar McClanahan and David Dorris McClanahan, Jr and Sisters; Selma McClanahan, Frances Gwaltney, and Pauline Williams. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Clanahan was a graduate of Gordonsville High School and a member of the Brush Creek Church of Christ.

Mr. McClanahan is survived by Children; Robin Watson of Alexandria, TN, and Traci McClanahan of Alexandria, TN. Grandchildren; Logan Watson of Alexandria, TN, and Courtney Watson of Murfreesboro, TN.

Celebration of Life and Graveside Services for Mr. McClanahan will be held at New Hope Cemetery in Alexandria, TN, and will be announced when they are available.

In loving Memory of, Robina C. Adkins, 64 of Carthage, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026.
She was a proud mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be remembered by her family and friends for the life she lived and the memories she created with those who knew her. She enjoyed spending time with her dog Ziggy, her friends, and the things that brought her comfort and enjoyment. Throughout her life, she experienced many seasons, challenges, and meaningful moments that shaped the person she became.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Ollie Wilkinson, and her grandsons Ethan Page and Elijah Castro.
She is survived by her daughters Hannah (Speedy) Morales and Cassandra (Benjamin) Hill, grandchildren Julian Castro and Leila Page, brother Jerry Wilkinson, sisters Brenda McNabb, Judy (Rick) Sexton, Crystal Wilkinson, and Summer Star Irwin.
May she rest in peace.

Mrs. Cherry Slack Deering, age 73, of Carthage, TN, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2026.

Mrs. Deering was born April 10, 1953 in Lebanon, TN, a daughter of the late Charles Hubert Slack and Ruby Nell Denney Slack. Mrs. Deering was also preceded in death by Sons; Stephen Porterfield and Hubert Carroll Porterfield and Brothers; Glenn Dale Slack and Bobby Slack. She was a Carthage Native and grew up in the Rome and Flat Rock Communities. Mrs. Deering graduated from Smith County High School in 1972. She worked at Hartman Luggage for 30 years. Mrs. Deering was a member of the Rome Baptist Church.

Mrs. Deering is survived by Daughters; Holly (Scott) Kemp of Carthage, TN, and Michelle (Daniel Duncan) Draper of Carthage, TN. Sisters; Marie (Digger) Poindexter of Carthage, TN, and Charlene (Wayne) Bryant of Red Boiling Springs, TN. Five grandchildren; Bethanie (Andrew) Goolsby, Nicholas Kemp, Elizabeth Kemp, Destiny Duncan, and Jonathan Draper. Great granddaughter; Lillie Goolsby.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Deering are scheduled to be conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes on Friday, September 4, 2026 at 3PM with Rev. Anthony Dixon officiating. Interment will follow in the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation with the family will be at the Carthage Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes on Friday from 11AM until service time at 3PM.

William Douglas Kell of Castalian Springs, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2026. He was born on December 24, 1932, to William Beckwith and Ethel Marie Phillians Kell in Springfield, Ohio.

Doug graduated from Enon High School in 1950, where he excelled in sports. He pursued farming in his early years alongside his brothers, Dale and David. He was drafted into the Army in 1953 during the Korean War. When he returned home, he met the love of his life, D. Sue Storts, and they married in 1957.

From this union, Kee Annette and Khristi Ann were born, completing their family. While in Springfield, they were active at Clifton Avenue United Methodist Church. In 1972, they moved to Tennessee and started various businesses in the Middle Tennessee area. Doug is survived by daughters, Kee Kell (Dale) Circle of Saint Paris, Ohio, and Khristi Kell Fisher of Gallatin, Tennessee; grandchildren, Case Kell (Amy) Circle and Bo Kell Circle of Saint Paris, Ohio, and Kendle Kell Fisher and Kell Ann Fisher of Gallatin, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Thor, Lottie, and Duke Circle of Saint Paris, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Ann Storts Hill, Patty Black Locke, and Beverly Yeary Kell; many nieces and nephews; and special cousin, Joanne Kell Wallace. Doug had a sweet companion for twelve years, Jean Welck Smith of Lebanon, Tennessee, and they attended Lebanon First United Methodist Church together.

Mrs. Cathy Bennett Smith, age 67, of Manchester, TN, passed away on Saturday August 8, 2026. Born in Nashville, TN on August 29, 1958, she was a daughter of the late R J Bennett and Ruby Pauline Burton Bennett. She was also preceded by a brother, Randall Dale Bennett, Sr., brother-in-law Kerry Pennington. Cathy graduated from East High School in Nashville, TN. She worked as a waitress at Cracker Barrell and worked as a Digital Imaging Tech for HCA Stonecrest Hospital. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; sitting on the front porch drinking coffee and feeding hummingbirds and squirrels.

Frances Lee Gwaltney Hunter was born on February 18, 1923, in Gordonsville, TN to Oliver Wendell Gwaltney and Gladys Ines Williams Gwaltney, the eldest of five siblings. She attended Gordonsville High School where she played basketball and graduated from Peabody College with a degree in accounting. She married the boy next door, William Mose “Bill” Hunter, and the two had an enviable marriage that spanned 64 years until his death in 2007. Stationed in Washington, D.C. during World War II, they returned afterwards to Murfreesboro, TN where they raised their daughter Marcia Hunter Anderson. There, Frances combined her people skills and love of books into a career as a librarian at Middle Tennessee State University and was active in many community organizations, including the United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the MTSU Dames Club. A seasoned traveler to over 100 countries, Frances was among the first Americans to travel to China in 1973 following Nixon’s reestablishment of American ties to that country. As the family historian and bookworm, Frances instilled a love of learning and reading in particular to her daughter and grandchildren, who fondly remember happy hours wandering the stacks at MTSU and trips to the local bookstore wherever they went. Mrs. June Gibbs Vaden, age 94, of Hickman, TN, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026.

Born Alma Imogene Gibbs on February 14, 1932 in South Carthage, TN, a daughter of the late Virgil B “Smokey” Gibbs and Alice Era Hewitt Gibbs. She graduated from Smith County High School in 1949. Mrs. June was married to James Donald Vaden on August 1, 1959 by Brother Phocian Gibbs and he preceded her in death on November 6, 2009. She was also preceded in death by Son; Timothy Joel Vaden on February 15, 2024 and Siblings; Opal Maveline Gibbs, Edward Allen “Frog” Gibbs, Horace “Red” Gibbs, Maxie Albert Gibbs, Sr, and Phillip Wayne Gibbs.

She was saved on September 12, 1948 at South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Caney Fork Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Vaden is survived by Children; Donnie (Renia) Vaden of Chestnut Mound, TN, Darla Vaden of Hickman, TN, and Jeff “J.W.” (Rhonda) Vaden of Chestnut Mound, TN.
