Road running vs Trail running. The first of our running series

-

Some runners are strictly one or the other. Many runners starting out will start with road running, given that it’s typically more accessible and easier to start.

If you’re a runner who’s done both, you understand that the crossover between the two is completely different. While aerobic capacity matters for both, the pacing, fueling, gear, strategy, and even culture are completely different.

I’m an advocate for doing both if you have the access to do so.

And as always, use Hydra Endura to fuel you through it.

Electrolyte deep dive part 2: Magnesium

-
With so many forms of electrolytes it’s crucial that you use the best one in order to get the proper effects. This becomes even more apparent with Magnesium, the forgotten electrolyte.

Magnesium plays a crucial role in your bodies physiology, supporting energy production (ATP Synthesis), muscle function (contraction and release), and nerve signaling from the brain to the muscles.

When developing our Endura Blend we were surprised to learn that a large percentage of the population is magnesium deficient, especially when it’s such an essential electrolyte.

The form matters, and we felt strongly about using magnesium Bi-glycinate given its highly absorbable, it’s great at supporting and relaxing muscles meaning it helps avoid cramping, and it’s the best option out there for the post workout recovery.

Part 1 of our electrolyte deep dive - sodium.

-

Sodium is one of the more commonly known electrolytes. It plays a crucial role in muscle function, cellular hydration, and fluid balance. Sodium works on the cellular level by keeping a balance of water moving in and out of the cells.

The level of sodium in your bloodstream makes a difference.

Too little (hyponatremia) can be caused by excessive water consumption without electrolytes to balance, long duration exercise, and high sweat loss. This leads to:

- cramping, muscle weakness
- headaches, nausea
- bloating,
- reduced performance and clarity

Too much (hypernatremia) is caused by water loss exceeding sodium loss, or not hydrating adequately prior to exercise. This leads to:

- thirst, dry mouth
- fatigue
- ability to maintain body temp (stay cool)

While balance is crucial, the form of sodium plays a big role. There are several different forms of sodium including chloride, citrate, bicarbonate, and types that include pink Himalayan salt, sea salt, and more.

Each have different effects on performance. For our Endura blend we chose Tri-sodium citrate due to its advanced hydration and absorption, ease on the stomach, and overall taste.

Not all electrolytes are created equal. To perform your best, you need the best.

A better form of energy.

———
When formulating the Endura blend, we were looking to add something to the mix that could help support endurance, which is when we discovered paraxanthine.

Caffeine is known in the endurance to give you that extra boost during hard efforts. For me personally it has helped me throughout my races and training sessions.

Caffeine alone is great, but has its drawbacks when used for training and racing. I’ve had races where too much caffeine has caused my heart rate to spike, and my performance to crash.

Paraxanthine was introduced to us as the “benefits of caffeine without the typical side effects”. Some of those benefits include a shorter half life compared to caffeine, which is ideal for long efforts, less of an impact on heart rate compared to caffeine, and overall a calmer sensation of alertness and energy.

To us it seemed like a no brainer, so we brought it to hydra.
