I see a lot of people comparing themselves to a version of their body that doesn't exist. Sometimes it's who they were at 45. Sometimes it's who they think they should be by now, six weeks in, further along than they actually are.

And the comparison isn't harmless. It puts you at a deficit before you've started. You show up to move already behind, already failing something.

So when I teach, I'm asking you to take your body through the range it has available today and see what's there. Not what it SHOULD be.

Some days there's more. Some days there's less. Neither one means anything about you.

New episode of Yoga for Longevity this week on what your body and your joints actually need, and why the gentlest work in the class is often doing the most.

Modern life isn't very kind to our hips.

Hours at a desk, in the car, or on the couch can leave your hip flexors spending much of the day in a shortened position. Over time, your body can become a little less tolerant of that posture, leaving your hips feeling stiff and achy, sometimes even contributing to lower back discomfort.

This supported bridge variation is one of my favorite gentle ways to give those hip flexors some love.

✔️ The yoga block gently lifts your pelvis, creating more opening through the front of the hip.
✔️ Extending one leg while hugging the opposite knee in gives the hip flexors an even deeper stretch.
✔️ Keeping the extended leg active and the tailbone slightly tucked helps target the stretch while supporting your lower back.
✔️ It can leave your hips feeling more open, your stride a little easier, and your lower back a little happier.

Enjoy.

Dealing with nagging knee pain? Your calves might be more involved than you think.

(Side note: this stretch is a lot more "sensational" than it looks!)

Tight calves can pull on the structures around your knee, limit ankle mobility, and contribute to that discomfort, especially with everyday movement like walking or stairs.

Consistent stretches like this can make a real difference over time, easing tension that's been quietly affecting your joints.

Tip: If you want MORE of an intense stretch, step your back foot up. If you want LESS sensation, step the back foot further back behind you.

🧘 Comment MOVE and I'll send you a free 7 day trial of Lifelong Yoga Online, so you can build this kind of joint-friendly mobility into your everyday routine.

This pose looks simple, but there's a reason it feels so good.

The little detail of resting one ankle on top of the opposite knee isn't just for comfort. It creates gentle leverage, encouraging a little more hip internal rotation, a movement many of us lose from years of sitting.

Why does that matter?

Because when your hips move better, your lower back often doesn't have to work so hard.

This variation can help:

✔️ Improve hip internal rotation using gentle, supported leverage.
✔️ Release tension around the hips and lower back.
✔️ Can help relieve that "stuck" feeling around the SI joint.
✔️ Nourish the hip joint by moving it in a direction it doesn't get very often.
✔️ Calm your nervous system while your body gradually lets go of unnecessary tension.

Try holding the pose for 5 to 7 slow, smooth breaths before switching sides.

Sometimes the gentlest movements are the ones your body has really been asking for.

I'd rather see you do 15 minutes most days than one ambitious class a week that you dread and eventually skip.

15 minutes is doable. Doable is sustainable. The habit is what changes you.

And a yoga practice you can do on a bad day is a practice you'll still have a year from now.

New episode of Yoga for Longevity this week on how often you actually need to practice after 50, with the real numbers.

Your spine, shoulders, neck, and chest will thank you for this one.

This gentle shape works through all of it at once, releasing tension across your upper body while giving your spine room to breathe.

✔️ Use a rolled up blanket (or 2 if you want more lift) under your back along your spine
✔️ Let your chest open and your shoulders soften away from your ears, arms down by your sides with palms facing up
✔️ Notice how the expansion of this shape helps you breathe a little easier

It's one of those poses that feels just as good as it looks, easing the tightness that builds up from sitting, driving, or just carrying stress in your upper body.

🧘 Comment MOVE and I'll send you a free 7 day trial of Lifelong Yoga Online, so you can build more moments of release like this into your week.
