Excellent work Joshlyn!

Earlier this month, Turtle Mountain Recovery Center recognized Joshlyn Resek as she completed her graduate practicum with us.

Joshlyn is pursuing her Master of Public Health and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the University of North Dakota. With a specialization in Indigenous Health, she chose to complete her project with an organization serving an Indigenous community.

During her time at TMRC, Joshlyn contributed to several important projects supporting staff education and organizational development. She researched training opportunities, helped develop educational resources and policies, and shared recommendations that will support our continued growth.

Save the date for INMED's 1st annual Health Professions Career Expo!

We are calling on all Indian Health Service sites, as well as Tribal health providers to join us in Grand Forks this November 13th to meet with prospective and future employees- over 700 health professions students and faculty from all clinical and biomedical disciplines at UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Please join us in welcoming Melvin Monette-Barajas as our new Director! Big things on the horizon for INMED with Melvin at the helm!

The North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences and Indians Into Medicine-University of North Dakota are excited to announce Melvin Monette-Barajas as the new Director of INMED.

After attending both Cankdeska Cikana Community College and Turtle Mountain Community College, Monette-Barajas went on to earn both his bachelor's (BSED) and master's (MSED) from UND. He previously served as a Director, Executive Director and Chief Executive with the American Indian Graduate Center, the Cobell Scholarship Fund and Indigenous Education, Inc., respectively, and brings a network of stakeholders deeply invested in American Indian and Alaska Native educational initiatives to the role.

Monette-Barajas officially started on July 1st and has spent his first few days as director meeting with staff and students from all of the INMED programs. Please join us in welcoming him to SMHS!

Summer Institute students had the chance to learn about indigenous foods with Chef Shelrae Davis, member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa.

Chef Davis prepared a power bowl including wild rice, bison, and a three sister succotash. On the side, she served a sweet wild rice dessert and a cedar & berry tea. Chef Davis provided a lesson on the students on the history of our ancestral foods and the importance on cooking with good intentions.

“Think about your ‘why’. You’re going to have to worry about being the only brown kid -You’re going to have to worry about family- You’re going to have to worry about being the “first” in so many ways, all of that AND THEN also having to worry about money. My job is to work hard to make sure you can worry about school, and that you can give back in the same way after you graduate. Remember your purpose, remember what you’re good at, and remember that you matter!”
