Home Safety Tip Wednesday! 🏠

Did you know regular home safety assessments can prevent falls and accidents? As we age, it's important to make simple adjustments to our homes to prevent common injuries.

Here are some bathroom safety tips for seniors:

🛁 Install Grab Bars: Place grab bars near the toilet and on the inside and outside of the shower or tub. Do not use towel racks for support, as they are not designed to bear weight.

🛁 Prevent Slips: Use non-slip mats, strips, or decals on the floor of the tub or shower. Place a non-slip mat on the bathroom floor right outside the shower or tub.

🛁 Water Temperature: Set your water heater's thermostat no higher than 120°F to prevent scalding.

🛁 Seating: Consider using a shower seat or bench to sit on while bathing. A raised toilet seat with handrails can also make it easier to get up and down.

Emergency Preparedness:

🚨 Keep a list of emergency numbers (911, poison control, doctor) in large print near every phone.

🚨 Consider a medical alert system with a wearable button or a smart device that can detect a fall and automatically call for help.

🚨 Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors on every floor and test the batteries regularly.

🚨 Have a fire extinguisher on each floor and know how to use it.

🚨 Never smoke in bed or leave candles burning unattended.

Home Safety Tip Wednesday! 🏠

Did you know regular home safety assessments can prevent falls and accidents? As we age, it's important to make simple adjustments to our homes to prevent common injuries. The most common hazards for seniors are related to falls, but other risks like fires and poisoning also exist.

Here are some general home safety tips for seniors:

🏠 Remove Clutter: Keep all walking paths, stairways, and hallways clear of items like books, papers, shoes, and clothes.

🏠 Improve Lighting: Ensure your home is well-lit, but avoid glare. Place light switches at the top and bottom of stairs and at the end of long hallways. Use nightlights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways. Keep a flashlight near your bed in case of a power outage.

🏠 Secure Floors: Remove throw rugs and small area rugs, as they are a major tripping hazard. If you must keep them, secure them to the floor with double-sided tape or a non-slip backing. Fix any loose floorboards or carpeting.

🏠 Manage Cords: Keep electrical cords and phone cords tucked away and out of walking areas. Avoid using multiple extension cords in one outlet, which can be a fire hazard.

🏠 Accessibility: Keep frequently used items at waist level or within easy reach. Use a "reach stick" or a sturdy step stool with a handrail to access things that are too high, and always ask for help if needed.
