Your Cells Need Energy Too!

We often talk about symptoms - fatigue, brain fog, metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, cardiovascular problems, or difficulty recovering.

But what if we also looked inside the cell?

Your mitochondria are responsible for producing much of the ATP your cells use as energy. When mitochondrial function declines, the result can be impaired energy production, increased oxidative stress, altered calcium signaling, cellular damage, and inflammation.

This creates a potential vicious cycle:

Less cellular energy → more oxidative stress → more inflammation → more mitochondrial dysfunction → even less cellular energy.

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in a wide range of chronic conditions, including cardiometabolic disease, insulin resistance, neurodegenerative disorders, and other chronic inflammatory conditions.

That doesn't mean mitochondrial dysfunction is the cause of these diseases - but it may be one important piece of the puzzle.

Where does PEMF fit in?

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy is an interesting emerging tool in the world of regenerative and integrative medicine.

Laboratory and animal research suggests that certain PEMF parameters may influence mitochondrial respiration, ATP production, calcium signaling, mitochondrial biogenesis, antioxidant defenses, and inflammatory pathways.

Human evidence is more nuanced. The strongest clinical evidence isn't necessarily for "recharging your cells.” It's for pain and musculoskeletal conditions.

What does the research show?

Osteoarthritis: A meta-analyses of placebo-controlled trials have found improvements in pain, stiffness, and physical function, although results vary considerably between studies and treatment parameters. [2-4]

Chronic low back pain: A meta-analysis of 14 trials involving 618 patients found a significant reduction in chronic low back pain, although improvement in physical function was not demonstrated. [5]

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS): Cochrane evidence is mixed - one trial found no clear effect, while others reported moderate-to-substantial pain reductions. [6]

Joint/soft tissue pain: A multicenter randomized control trial of 120 patients, found daily self-administered PEMF superior to standard care. PEMF users saw a 36% reduction in pain versus 10% with standard care, along with decreased analgesic use from 40% to 18%. [7]

How does PEMF work?

Researchers have proposed several mechanisms, including:

Modulation of nitric oxide signaling
Anti-inflammatory effects
Antioxidant signaling
Effects on tumor necrosis factor and anti-oxidant pathways
Modulation of adenosine receptors involved in inflammation
Potential effects on mitochondrial function and cellular metabolism
The evidence for PEMF as a way to reverse systemic mitochondrial dysfunction or treat chronic disease is still limited. Effects appear to depend heavily on the frequency, intensity, duration, and specific type of electromagnetic field being used.

PEMF is a potentially useful adjunctive therapy, particularly for pain and musculoskeletal conditions, where human evidence is more encouraging. PEMF is noninvasive, generally well tolerated, can be done at home, and may offer another option for people looking for non-pharmacologic approaches to pain management.

Please join us in experiencing PEMF and other technologies during Good Vibes - Grounding Hour Thursday, August 20th.

As a new week begins, and building on the "Beauty" email from last Monday, I'm reminded of an ancient Diné (Navajo) prayer that feels relevant in a world that often moves too fast.

"With beauty before me, may I walk.
With beauty behind me, may I walk.
With beauty above me, may I walk.
With beauty below me, may I walk.
With beauty all around me, may I walk."

What if mindfulness isn't something we have to find, but something we choose to notice?

Beauty isn't reserved for mountaintops or perfect moments. It's in the morning light filtering through the trees, the sound of birds greeting the day, the kindness of a stranger, and the resilience we discover within ourselves.

This week, instead of rushing from one task to the next, pause long enough to notice what is beautiful around you. Let gratitude guide your steps. Let wonder soften your perspective. Let nature remind you that every season has its purpose - including the one you're walking through right now.

May you walk with beauty before you, behind you, above you, below you, and all around you.

What Is Regenerative Medicine - and Does It Matter Who Provides Your Care?

Last night, I attended a regenerative medicine dinner presentation here in the Grand Valley. It sparked an important question:

When you're considering regenerative medicine, does it matter who is providing your care - and whether they're part of your community?

The answer is YES!

According to the FDA, regenerative medicine is an approach to restore, replace, or regenerate cells, tissues, or organs to treat or mitigate disease. Its goal is to support the body's own healing processes rather than simply masking symptoms.

For many people with arthritis, chronic pain, tendon injuries, sports injuries, or age-related degeneration, regenerative medicine offers the potential to improve function, reduce pain, and, in some cases, delay or avoid surgery.

There are companies from outside Colorado traveling throughout the Western Slope offering in-home regenerative injections. While this may seem convenient, every patient deserves to ask a few important questions before deciding on treatment:

What exactly is being injected?
Where does the product come from?
How is it processed and characterized?
What scientific evidence supports its use?
Am I an appropriate candidate?
Who will follow my progress after treatment?
What happens if I have questions, complications, or need additional care?
But regenerative medicine is far more than an injection and the best outcomes rarely come from a single injection alone.

Successful regenerative medicine begins with a comprehensive evaluation, understanding the underlying cause of your condition, identifying factors that may interfere with healing, optimizing your overall health, selecting the most appropriate regenerative therapy, and providing ongoing follow-up to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Having a local physician matters.

It means you have someone who knows your medical history, understands your goals, is available if questions arise, and remains your partner throughout the healing process - not just on the day of the procedure.

At MIMI's Clinic, regenerative medicine is integrated with functional and lifestyle medicine because healing doesn't occur in isolation. We address nutrition, inflammation, metabolic health, hormones, movement, sleep, and other factors that influence your body's ability to repair itself.

I am also Colorado's only Diplomat of the American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians, providing evidence-informed regenerative care with an emphasis on patient safety, education, individualized treatment planning, and long-term follow-up.

If you're considering regenerative medicine, take the time to understand your options, ask questions, and choose a provider who will be with you throughout your healing journey. Call us to schedule an informational session and learn whether regenerative medicine may be appropriate for you.

Regenerative medicine is highly individualized. Not every therapy is appropriate for every patient, and outcomes vary. Treatment decisions should be based on a comprehensive medical evaluation and current evidence.

Regenerative medicine isn't just about an injection. It’s about comprehensive care.

Recognizing the Beauty That Surrounds Us

The past 36 hours have been a whirlwind. We had family in town, which included giving them a grand tour of Colorado's Grand Valley. From scenic overlooks and vineyards to orchards, local treasures, and unforgettable views, we packed a lot into a day and a half.

Something beautiful happens when you show visitors the place you call home. You begin to see it through fresh eyes. The familiar becomes remarkable again. The landscapes seem a little more breathtaking, the sunsets a little more vibrant, and the moments a little more meaningful.

Recognizing the beauty around us is a practice of slow observation, gratitude, and inner peace. It reminds us that wonder isn't reserved for faraway destinations—it exists right where we are, waiting for us to pause long enough to notice.

Sometimes the greatest gift our guests leave behind is a renewed appreciation for the extraordinary beauty we've overlooked in the ordinary.

Here's to slowing down, looking up, and rediscovering the places - and the people - we're grateful to call home.

As Henry David Thoreau noted, the true question is not what you look at, but what you actually see.

Finding gratitude - even when the tomatoes don't cooperate.

This morning, instead of getting up early to write, I wandered out into the garden.

I tended plants, harvested vegetables, and spent time with my hands in the dirt.

Like many of us, my tomatoes haven't been thriving these past several weeks. The combination of intense heat, limited water, and smoky air has taken its toll. Yet my eggplants are flourishing, my peppers are finally hitting their stride, and the herbs - especially the Thai basil and oregano - are flourishing way beyond expectation this year.

Gardens have a funny way of teaching us lessons we weren't looking for.

At first, I found myself disappointed by the tomatoes. Then I caught myself reframing the story.

Maybe my tomatoes aren't failing. Maybe they're just trying to save me the work of canning this year.

Yes, I realize I'm assigning human motives to a tomato plant. But sometimes changing the story we tell ourselves changes how we experience the moment.

The garden is still beautiful. The plants still deserve care, even when they aren't producing exactly what I hoped. And perhaps that's true for us, too.

Not every season is meant for abundance in every area of life. Some parts of us may be thriving while others are simply surviving difficult conditions. Both deserve patience. Both deserve nurturing.

So instead of sharing self-care tips this Saturday, I'll simply offer this:

Spend a little time tending your own garden.

Whether that's an actual garden, your family, your work, your relationships, your health, or your inner world, give your attention to whatever helps restore you.

And if one part of your life isn't flourishing right now - relax, breathe, and recognize the parts that are.

One of the Most Powerful Longevity Practices You Can Start Today

Aging well isn't just about adding years to your life—it's about adding life to your years.

Research continues to show that mindfulness is one of the most powerful tools for supporting healthy aging, benefiting the brain, body, and emotional well-being.

Protect Your Brain

Just 10 minutes of daily mindfulness has been shown to improve attention, memory, and the brain's ability to multitask. Studies suggest it strengthens the brain's attention networks, helping preserve cognitive function as we age.

Support Healthy Cellular Aging

Chronic stress accelerates aging by increasing inflammation and damaging our cells. Mindfulness helps calm the body's stress response, reduces inflammation, and may even help protect telomeres—the protective caps on our chromosomes that are associated with healthy aging and longevity.

Build Emotional Resilience

Mindfulness helps regulate the body's stress response by lowering cortisol levels and reducing overactivity in the brain's fear center (the amygdala). The result is greater emotional balance, improved focus, and a calmer response to life's challenges.

Age with Purpose

Healthy aging isn't just physical—it's emotional, mental, and social. Mindfulness encourages us to move from constantly doing to intentionally being, allowing us to embrace each stage of life with greater meaning, gratitude, and resilience.

Simple Ways to Practice Mindful Aging

Replace negative, age-related self-talk with empowering language.
Slow down and take a mindful walk, noticing each step and your surroundings.
Spend 5–10 minutes each day practicing deep breathing or relaxation.
Stay connected through meditation groups, community activities, or meaningful conversations.
Practice realistic optimism by acknowledging challenges while intentionally focusing on what brings purpose and joy.
The science is clear: healthy aging begins with caring for both the mind and the body. Small daily mindfulness practices can improve brain health, reduce stress, support cellular resilience, and enhance quality of life at every age.

Be Weather Ready: Heavy Rain Can Cause Flooding & Debris Flows Within Minutes

Flooding is one of the deadliest weather hazards in the United States, and it can develop with little warning. Whether you live near rivers, canyons, or recently burned landscapes, understanding flood risks can help protect you and your loved ones.

Know the Difference:
• Flood Watch = Conditions are favorable for flooding. Stay alert and be prepared.
• Flood Warning = Flooding is occurring or is imminent. Take action immediately.
• Flash Flood Warning = Life-threatening flooding is happening or expected within minutes to hours. Move to higher ground immediately—do not wait.

Flash Floods
Flash floods are the most dangerous type of flooding because they develop rapidly—often within minutes after intense rainfall. They can occur even if it isn't raining where you are. Low-lying roads, canyons, creeks, washes, and urban areas can fill with fast-moving water with little warning.

Burn Scar Flooding
Areas affected by recent wildfires are at especially high risk. Burned soil often becomes water-repellent, preventing rainfall from soaking into the ground. Even a brief rainstorm can trigger rapid runoff, flash flooding, and debris flows. If you live near a recent burn scar, monitor weather alerts closely and evacuate immediately if instructed.

Mudslides & Debris Flows
Heavy rainfall can loosen rocks, soil, trees, and debris on steep slopes, creating fast-moving mudslides and debris flows. Warning signs include:
• Sudden increases in stream flow
• Cracking or rumbling sounds
• Water becoming muddy with rocks or debris
• Small slides that may precede a larger event

Move away from hillsides, drainage channels, slot canyons, and creek beds if these conditions develop.

Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown
Never drive or walk through floodwaters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and 12 inches can carry away most vehicles. The road beneath the water may also be washed out.

What To Do:

Before a Flood
• Know if you live in a flood-prone or burn scar area.
• Sign up for emergency alerts.
• Prepare an emergency kit with medications, water, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
• Have an evacuation plan for your family and pets.

During a Flood
• Move to higher ground immediately.
• Avoid floodwaters—they may contain sewage, chemicals, debris, and hidden electrical hazards.
• Never walk, swim, or drive through flooded roads.
• Follow evacuation orders without delay.

After a Flood
• Return home only when officials say it is safe.
• Wear protective equipment during cleanup.
• Watch for mold, structural damage, and contaminated water.
