Happy Certified Nursing Assistant Week! This month's Getting To Know NSH Article is an appreciation to a role that is CRUCIAL to resident & patient care. Thank you for all you do! And thank you Amy James for a lovely article celebrating this work.

Getting to Know North Shore Health

Celebrating Certified Nursing Assistants Week: What’s Your Why?

By: Amy James, Skin and Wound Nurse Specialist, North Shore Health

In my 15 years at North Shore Health, I have served as a floor nurse, the Resident Care Manager, and am now the Skin and Wound Nurse. Through each of these roles, I have gained a deeper understanding of what makes excellent resident care possible. Repeatedly, I have come to appreciate a group whose contributions are truly indispensable; the Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). They are at the heart of resident care, providing the daily support, compassion, and attention that help residents maintain their dignity, independence, and quality of life.

In the midst of busy schedules, routines, and responsibilities, it is easy to focus solely on the work that needs to be done. Sometimes, however, we forget to tell the story of ourselves to ourselves. When we don't take time to reflect on our values, celebrate our growth, and acknowledge the challenges we have overcome, we may lose sight of our purpose, our "why."

At North Shore Living, North Shore Health's skilled nursing facility, our dedicated CNAs are the bread-and-butter, boots-on-the-ground caregivers who make a meaningful difference in residents' lives every day. They assist residents in countless large and small ways, empowering them to do what they are able to do and to be their best selves every day. In recognition of National CNA Week, June 11–17, 2026, I invited our CNAs to reflect on their own "why" and share the reasons they chose this important work and continue to serve with such dedication.

Common themes that emerged included passion, trust, pride, learning, people, fulfillment, and joy. Many CNAs shared sentiments like, “I like to bring hope and happiness to the residents,” “I like to care for residents the way I would want to be cared for,” and “I feel valued for the work I do.”

CNAs provide care to multiple residents each shift and their work often encompasses all of these sentiments. It may be tedious, emotionally challenging, physically exhausting, and at times frustrating. Yet, without exception, our CNAs continue to choose their role, providing care and caring to the residents they serve each day.

The work of CNAs is evidence that there are more important goals in life than simply being “well”. For most residents, health challenges are the reason they can no longer live at home. Yet living well is about more than physical health alone. Well-being involves finding purpose, dignity, and connection despite the physical or cognitive challenges these elders face.

The Eden Alternative is an elder care movement with a mission to improve the well-being of elders by transforming the communities in which they live. This group has identified and defined 7 Domains of Well-Being for elders living in the spectrum of care: Identity, Growth, Autonomy, Security, Connectedness, Meaning, and Joy. These domains recognize that quality care extends beyond meeting physical needs; it also involves honoring each person's individuality, relationships, purpose, and sense of belonging.

At North Shore Living, these principles come to life through the work of our dedicated CNAs who provide compassionate care around the clock. Because ours is a small nursing home community, CNAs have the opportunity to know each resident as an individual and tailor care to their unique preferences and routines. They know who prefers coffee or tea in the morning, when residents like to wake up, shower, or go to bed, what clothing makes them feel most comfortable, which foods they enjoy or avoid, whether they prefer meals in their room or the dining room, and which activities bring them the most fulfillment.

All of these details are known, honored, and integrated into the daily routines. The foundation for excellent care is relationship, and no one in our organization has a closer relationship with residents than our CNAs.

For these relationships to thrive, CNAs must be present; not just to provide care, but to listen, remember, and engage. As they do, they bring opportunities for residents to be well known, to have choice, to maintain dignity, to feel safe, to engage meaningfully, to belong, and to experience moments of joy.

As we celebrate National CNA week, let’s take time to thank our CNAs and listen to their stories; because their stories are part of ours. As we listen, let’s also take a look around and see their story reflected in the well-being of our residents.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

North Shore Health Welcomes Dr. Phillip Thomas from Orthopaedic Associates of Duluth for Monthly Clinics in Grand Marais

GRAND MARAIS, MN – North Shore Health (NSH) is pleased to announce a new partnership with Orthopaedic Associates of Duluth to bring monthly orthopaedic specialty clinics to the Grand Marais community beginning in July.

These clinics will expand access to specialized orthopaedic care close to home, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for initial consultations, various treatments, and follow‑up care.

Dr. Phillip Thomas from Orthopaedic Associates of Duluth will serve as the primary physician for orthopaedic clinics at NSH. Dr. Thomas is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of orthopaedic conditions. He specializes in advanced surgical and non-surgical care for the hip, knee, and shoulder, with a particular focus on sports-related injuries and complex joint problems. His practice also includes a strong emphasis on cartilage restoration and joint preservation techniques.

As an Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Thomas evaluates pain and injuries related to physical activity, overuse, aging, and sports. He works with patients to determine the most appropriate treatment options, which may include bracing or splinting, pain management or injections, physical therapy, or surgery when necessary. Orthopaedic Associates provides comprehensive support from initial injury through pre‑ and post‑surgical care, coordinating closely with rehabilitation teams to help patients return to the activities they enjoy.

Monthly clinics will be held on the first Wednesday of each month beginning in July. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Thomas, patients may speak with their primary care provider about a referral or contact NSH directly at 218‑387‑3509. Being a rural, independent hospital often means balancing big responsibilities with limited resources. Small rural hospitals face many challenges- from financial pressures to meeting Medicare and Medicaid requirements to negotiating complex insurance contracts.

North Shore Health is proud to be a founding member of the Headwaters Network, a collaboration of 22 rural, independent healthcare providers across Minnesota working together to reduce barriers and strengthen care.

As a clinically integrated rural health network, the Headwaters High Value Network brings member hospitals/clinics together to identify and invest in shared infrastructure that supports long-term sustainability, operational excellence, and high-quality care across our region. These shared efforts help enhance collaboration, improve efficiency, and prepare rural hospitals/clinics for evolving healthcare models and reimbursement structures.

Thank you to the NSH Board and Leadership for carefully evaluating all options and focusing on what will best serve our patients, staff, and communities for years to come. Partnerships like Headwaters allow independent organizations like ours to benefit from collective strength and shared resources while still maintaining local governance and decision-making.

Getting to Know North Shore Health
More Than a Meal: How the Dietary Team Supports Healing

By: Flavia Alvarez Maldonado, Certified Dietary Manager and Certified Food Protection Manager at North Shore Health.

The Dietary Team at North Shore Health (NSH) serves a wide range of people: long- term Care Center residents, patients recovering from an injury or illness, loved ones visiting residents and patients, and the hardworking staff who support them every day. We understand that those who sit down to eat at NSH may be carrying something heavy, and that makes the care we put into each meal all the more important.

Behind each tray and every ingredient is a team working together with one purpose: making a meaningful difference in the lives of some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

Who are we?

We are currently a team of 10 hardworking, strong, fun, creative and passionate people. Our diverse personalities and perspectives are what makes us unique, with each of us adding our own “seasoning” to this well-tuned orchestra. We take pride in our work ethic and the fact that every member of this team is reliable, accountable, and respectful.

We care deeply for one another, our residents and patients, and our fellow coworkers. Some of us have served for 40 years, while others are just beginning their journey, but we all share the same goal: to help our community in a meaningful way.

A Day in the Life

Our morning cooks begin their busy day at 5:00 am, jumping straight into a fast-paced routine where every task matters. Delivering coffee, restocking supplies, preparing meals, checking temperatures and expiration dates- everything follows a timeline and every task supports patient care.

Service is more than cooking or cleaning; it is about helping others feel comfortable, cared for, and welcome. A smile, a dad joke, or a quick conversation can go a long way. We want residents, patients, and employees to enjoy the time they spend here while also creating a fun and supportive work environment.

More Than Just a Meal…

Good nutrition is the foundation of health. For those at higher risk- older adults, children, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those facing food insecurity- healthy meals can make the difference between recovery and decline. Proper nutrition supports immune function, strengthens muscles and bones, improves energy levels, and promotes healing.

Our team creates personalized meal plans that honor cultural preferences, medical needs, and individual tastes. Through education, we help people understand the importance of balanced meals, hydration, and appropriate portion sizes. Above all, we offer compassionate care. Small gestures - like preparing comfort food or serving coffee in a favorite mug - can encourage eating, lift spirits, and support emotional well-being during difficult times.

Many of us spend countless hours, weeks, years at NSH. Employees work long shifts and many choose to purchase our flavorful meals. ER patients and outpatients may only be here for a few hours, but we aim to make even that brief time more comfortable by offering a hot meal, a cup of coffee, or an ice cream to a scared child. We get to know our patients, learn their preferences, and do our best to meet their needs.

For residents who call NSH home, we take special care to honor their likes and routines, building menu options around the foods they enjoy. During holidays and special events, our entire team comes together- from planning to ex*****on- to create meaningful experiences for residents and families. Families are invited, traditions are shared, and the atmosphere becomes one of celebration and connection.

As a Dietary Manager with a background in Culinary Arts- and work experience in restaurants, special events, and even on a cruise ship- I’ve always aimed to elevate the dining and service experience. Now that our team is fully staffed and we better understand our strengths and team dynamics, I can say confidently that we’re ready to push even further. We’re focusing on more home-made cooking, baking, and special preparations like smoothies and fresh snacks for our residents and hospital patients. We’ve already been moving in this direction, and we are seeing positive trends in patients’ lab values- real improvements that reflect healthier lifestyles and better overall well-being.

I am also proud to share that we now have a menu software system that has truly strengthened our operations. With built‑in nutrient analysis, it helps us meet CMS and Minnesota Department of Health requirements, as well as the standards needed to provide meal services for Law Enforcement. The system allows us to easily customize menus for renal, diabetic, cardiac, and texture‑modified diets, ensuring each person receives meals tailored to their medical needs. It also improves efficiency by automating menu cycles, meal selection tickets, production sheets, and purchasing lists. Most importantly, it supports resident satisfaction by offering greater variety and meals aligned with their preferences, ultimately enhancing their dining experience and overall quality of life.

In a nutshell, I am incredibly proud of this team, thankful of past employees and managers in Dietary who helped us define who we are today, our supportive community, our leaders, and the NSH employees who show their commitment every day to patients and coworkers alike - people who, in many ways, become like family. By working together as a team and partnering with residents and families, we continue to create meaningful dining experiences that nourish both body and spirit.

Celebrating Our Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), Hayley Loney!

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, and we’re proud to recognize the incredible work Hayley does every day to support communication across all ages.

This year, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is highlighting how essential communication is at every stage of life. From expressing basic needs to building relationships. It’s closely tied to independence, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.

SLPs help people of all ages overcome speech, language, cognitive, voice, and swallowing challenges that can affect daily living. Communication difficulties can also place added stress on loved ones and caregivers, making support even more important.

Tips for Supporting Communication at Home

For children:
• Focus on what the child is trying to say rather than correcting mistakes
• Celebrate all attempts to communicate
• Build language into everyday routines using the family’s preferred language

For adults experiencing communication changes (stroke, Parkinson’s, dementia, or other neurological conditions):
• Reduce background noise
• Offer short, one-step directions
• Give specific choices instead of open-ended questions
• Use gestures, writing, pictures, or other visual supports to boost understanding

Why this matters:
ASHA’s 2025 caregiver poll found that 60% of caregivers say communication breakdowns make daily life harder. More than 90% who worked with an SLP said they’d recommend speech-language pathology services to others.

SLPs work in hospitals, schools, rehab programs, long-term care settings, and outpatient clinics to diagnose and treat communication and swallowing disorders.

If you’re concerned about a child’s communication milestones—or if an adult experiences sudden slurred speech, confusion, or difficulty communicating—reach out to a healthcare provider right away.

Thank you, Hayley, for the life-changing impact you make in our community!
