Among the many eating grievances clients share, overeating is high on the list (alongside binge eating, chronic dieting, GI issues, and forgetting to eat/plan meals).
Overeating, at its essence, is eating beyond the point of the body's signal of satiation. The problem is that many, many of us have been domesticated in such a way that we are disconnected from any subtle sensations in the body, so we're left to figure out what the "right" amount of food to eat (from our HEADS and not our bodies), and hope and pray our bodies simply comply. On top of that, many of the more processed foods we have are designed to have a low-satiety point, meaning they are devoid of fiber in naturally occurring whole foods and are easier to overeat in general.
Though positively, whether you're eating a honey crisp apple, trail mix, popcorn, brownies, or smoked salmon, with enough savor and attention, there is a place where eating can organically end. Truly.
Sure, constructing metabolically satiating meals is important, and something I can cover in a different post, but today I'm pointing to one powerful ingredient that can dissolve patterns of overeating, and a few eating psychology principles that support it.
The powerful ingredient is AWARENESS, a quality of being that extends far beyond eating in its scope of power.
And three principles to work with when you want to stop overeating, feel better about your eating habits, and far more comfortable in your body:
1.) The core practice: Be present to what is actually happening (the taste, the sensation), so it actually registers as satisfying. If this sounds insultingly basic, really ask yourself how proficient you really are in this in all circumstances. For some people this is more "advanced" work than adding in an superfood could be.
2.) Accept the tiny grief that eating has to end, once you are satisfied. It's a real thing if you tend to overeat and don't want to.
3.) Build practices that allow for the natural expression of emotion (which is Life itself) to move through. The better you are at this, the less food is burdened to do the big job of distracting you from your emotions
