A simple blood test changed everything for this West Michigan teen.

At 14 years old, Grayson Visco became the first patient at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital to receive teplizumab (TZield), a groundbreaking treatment that can delay the progression of type 1 diabetes.

Thanks to early screening and close monitoring with our pediatric endocrinology team, Grayson's disease was caught before symptoms ever appeared, giving him access to a treatment that could delay the need for insulin by years.

"This is the first time we can actually delay the progression of type 1 diabetes and alter its course, which is a really big deal," said Dr. Nader Kasim, endocrinologist and diabetes specialist.

Screening is recommended for anyone with a family history of type 1 diabetes or other autoimmune conditions. A simple blood test can make all the difference.

Our West Michigan community is incredible!💙

The Corewell Health Foundation West Michigan Gala on May 16 raised over $1.5 million for our child and family life program and critical pediatric research. Both of these programs rely on philanthropy to continue providing life-changing care.

The support from this community never stops amazing us. To everyone who showed up, donated, and cheered on our mission, thank you. You are making a real difference for kids and families.

Ready? Set? Game on!🕹️♟️💙

This weekend, we hosted our 3rd Annual Game-A-Thon, bringing together patients with neuromuscular diagnoses for a day filled with video games, board games, face painting and more.

But it's about more than just games. This event gives kids a chance to connect with others who truly get it, while parents have the opportunity to meet and share their experiences in a supportive space.

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

You're invited to join us on May 13 at 8:30 p.m. for Project Night Lights!🔦

Area first responders and community members will surround Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and flash their lights to brighten bedtime for our patients. If you don't have a light, purple lights will be passed out to bring awareness to cystic fibrosis.

Inside the hospital, patients will flash their lights right back as a way of feeling the love and support from the community standing beside them.

If you're in the area, come show your support and help light up the night for these brave kids.💙

When Nathan Schloegl’s son, Luca, was born in 2022, he didn’t realize his short NICU stay at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital would change his life.

Nathan was working a job in private security at the time and was ready for a career change — something that would be meaningful and fulfilling. The NICU nurses that cared for Luca not only left a lasting impact on him, but on Nathan as well.

Nathan was so inspired by Luca’s care that he went back to school to become a nurse, citing it’s never too late to make a positive change. He graduated this past December and is now a nurse in the very same NICU Luca was a patient in.

His unique role as NICU dad and NICU nurse provides a unique perspective for him to relate and care for patient families.

The Today Show shared Nathan’s story as he celebrates his very first Nurse’s Week. Watch the segment at https://www.today.com/video/how-nicu-nurses-inspired-this-dad-to-become-one-of-them-262984261530.

To Nathan and all of all of our incredible nurses at Corewell Health, Happy !

Of all the places Sparty could've been last Thursday, he chose Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine brought the beloved mascot to go head-to-head with our patients in a game of "Name That Mascot" on Blue Glass Studio's live BINGO show before making the rounds to spread some green and white cheer.💚🤍

Leonardo Floresmonterosas graduated from our NICU and is heading home after 91 days!🎓

He was born at nearly 29 weeks, weighing 2 pounds, 9 ounces. Leonardo's mom said their NICU experience was wonderful, and the care team took great care of them.

When asked what inspired his name, his mom said, "My mom would always tell me I would have a little boy, and she wanted his name to be Leonardo. His cousins think I named him after the Ninja Turtles."

We're so proud of your Mighty Milestone, Leonardo!🎉
