A simple blood test changed everything for this West Michigan teen.
At 14 years old, Grayson Visco became the first patient at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital to receive teplizumab (TZield), a groundbreaking treatment that can delay the progression of type 1 diabetes.
Thanks to early screening and close monitoring with our pediatric endocrinology team, Grayson's disease was caught before symptoms ever appeared, giving him access to a treatment that could delay the need for insulin by years.
"This is the first time we can actually delay the progression of type 1 diabetes and alter its course, which is a really big deal," said Dr. Nader Kasim, endocrinologist and diabetes specialist.
Screening is recommended for anyone with a family history of type 1 diabetes or other autoimmune conditions. A simple blood test can make all the difference.
