One of the biggest mistakes I see is people searching for the perfect food.

Your gut doesn't need perfection.

It needs diversity.

Research suggests that a diverse microbiome is associated with better resilience and overall health.

One of the easiest ways to support diversity?

Eat more different plant foods.

Not just vegetables.

Think:

πŸ₯¬ Greens
🫐 Berries
🫘 Beans
🌿 Herbs
πŸ₯œ Nuts
🍠 Root vegetables

Your gut microbes appreciate variety more than dietary perfection.

Ever get butterflies before a presentation?

Lose your appetite during a stressful week?

Feel nauseated when you're anxious?

That's the gut-brain axis in action.

Your brain influences digestion.

Your digestive system influences mood, focus, stress resilience, and energy.

This communication happens through nerves, hormones, immune signals, and your gut microbes.

Your gut and brain are having a conversation all day long.

The question is:
Are they getting along?

When most people think about gut health, they think about bloating, constipation, or heartburn.

But your gut influences much more than digestion.

Your digestive system plays a role in:

β€’ Immune function
β€’ Hormone regulation
β€’ Nutrient absorption
β€’ Mood
β€’ Energy production
β€’ Inflammation

This is one reason why symptoms that seem unrelated to digestion can sometimes have gut-related contributors.

The body doesn't operate in isolated systems. Everything is connected.

As a naturopathic doctor, this is one of the reasons I spend so much time asking questions that may seem unrelated to your primary concern.

Sometimes the symptom isn't in the gut.
But the gut may still be part of the conversation.

It's a myth that there's only ever been one 'right' way to practice medicine.

The Flexner Report did improve safety and scientific standards. That part is true.

But it also closed Black medical schools, shrank opportunities for women and minorities, and cut off entire communities from local care. The "gold standard" came with a cost that didn't get distributed evenly.

Both things can be true at once. 🌿

Have you ever heard of the Flexner Report?? It literally changed the "face" of medicine (in more ways than one). Let's have a little history lesson on how the field of medicine has changed since the early 1900's.

Healthcare wasn't always the way it is now. People used to have far more options that aligned with their needs and beliefs prior to 1910.

Do you know what changed?

"Alternative" implies there's one default and everything else is a substitute.

Naturopathic medicine isn't a substitute. It's a distinct, legitimate model that asks why before it asks what to prescribe. 🌿

That's not an alternative. That's a different question entirely.
