Hannah Whalen Doula Care

Hannah Whalen Doula Care I am a DONA trained labor + delivery doula serving greater Grand Rapids, MI. I am passionate about childbirth education, preparation, and participation!

As a doula, I believe birth is something to embrace, not just let happen to or around you.

*She* is the reason I pursued birth work — my girl.

And not because I experienced birth trauma, or had an unplanned event or managed crisis come up in my story.

The opposite, actually — pregnant with my first, I had this nagging feeling there had to be MORE. More than just being weighed and measured. More than showing up for drugs and waiting to push.

I took a deep dive into childbirth education and read and listened to SO many stories.

I was prepared to “go against the grain” and fight for a positive physiological hospital birth. But what I found were really wonderful, supportive midwives and nurses who were happy to let me lead in labor, so far as I was risk-free.

I went on to have a GREAT birth, and I wanted to shout it from the rooftops: IT’S POSSIBLE! I EXPERIENCED IT!

But the harsh truth is this: my story is more the exception than the rule, especially if a mom goes into it with no education, no research, no advocate.

What a recipe for disaster.

THIS is what fuels me — keeping you in the drivers seat of your birth. Helping you prep, teaching you the beautiful rhythms of labor and how to participate with them. Helping you feel safe, making sure your voice is heard.

And if we can laugh a little, snap some photos, and maybe I’ll even braid your hair for you — all bonus.

Any doula worth her weight will tell you it’s an honor and a privilege to be invited into this space. It truly is.

I always tell moms in consults to find a doula who feels like a trusted sister, someone you don’t have to impress or perform for, someone you feel totally yourself around and know you can trust. They will be such an asset to your team, and no one who has found that doula has EVER regretted it. 🤎

Hospitals were designed for emergencies and risk management. They were designed to manage (you). They were not trained to trust their intuition, wait or listen to their patient above their professional training. It’s not a dig — it’s just the truth.

Some of you will thrive in this environment — it will make you feel safe and secure.

Some of you will want nothing to do with it.

Know which one you are, and own it.

In most cases, birth isn’t an emergency, but thank God for OBs and operating rooms when it is. And thank God, too, for birth workers who are wise and skilled in the ways of birthing, working in a completely different model of care and helping women feel safe and protected there, too.

Wherever you look…that’s where you’ll end up. Take the time to set your sights and do the work. It’s worth it, trust me.

Doulas do not speak for you, but we do create room for your voice to be heard.

What would you LOVE to get in a goodie bag from your doula?

🙋🏻‍♀️ I’ll go first — lip balm, scrunchies, snacks. Amen, amen.

*don’t mind our brown grass*

Last year, one of my friends (Lindsay Poole) shared how she and her boys ate breakfast outside almost every day. This stuck with me — it’s so key for cellular health, hormones, circadian rhythms, and more everyday functioning that our skin and eyes get unfiltered sunlight throughout the day!

Maybe it was the fact that last week, with the air quality, we barely got out at all, but I’m going to try something new with my girls — ✨the breakfast picnic✨.

This morning we ate and eventually started kicking around a soccer ball. We ended playing outside for quite awhile, NO tantrums, NO mess to clean up — amen!

My husband and I want to have more kids, and this summer I am leaning into my overall wellness. I’ve not loved being pregnant, and I know overall health and nutrition can make SUCH a difference in how your body responds to the needs of pregnancy.

Things I am doing to prep:
💫 signed up for chiro
💫 intentional sunlight
💫 walks + I want to learn how to lift weights
💫 up my intake of protein + fermented foods
💫 start taking a prenatal mix (fish oil + beef liver to start) along with minerals
💫 dream goal: cut way back on sugar and gluten

YOU know your body the best — this isn’t a one-size-fits-all, but for me, these things make me feel my best!

If you’re wanting to prep for pregnancy, you don’t have to do anything…but if you focus on your wellness and overall health, it can truly improve your pregnancy and nutrition stores during that time.

And I can’t not mention the men — lift weights, limit alcohol, cut out artificial fragrances (cologne, body wash, deodorant) for your hormone health + testosterone!

If you’ve walked this path, I’d love to hear what you found to be key!

The things you choose to focus on don’t just fill your thoughts—they shape your reality.

When you magnify fear, doubt, and scarcity, they begin to take up more space in your life. But when you intentionally focus on growth, gratitude, connection, and possibility, those are the things that expand.

This doesn’t mean ignoring hard things. It means choosing where your energy lives.

As a birth doula, I see this often. When we nurture confidence, trust, and support, those qualities have room to grow. The same is true beyond birth—our mindset, our relationships, and the way we move through life.

Pay attention to what you’re feeding with your attention.

Because what you magnify… you multiply. 💛
