Rooted Life Wellness

Rooted Life Wellness I'm a wife, a mother, a nurse and a self-proclaimed HealthNut! I believe in eating whole foods, moving your body, and most of all- balance! Hi There!

My name is Kelli and I am passionate about living a whole, healthy, and balanced life. I have an amazingly supportive and wildly energetic husband who is the love of my life! Together we have a sweet and spunky little girl, Evi who is always on-the-go! She and my husband bless me beyond belief more and more everyday! I work part-time as a registered nurse with a background in emergency medicine an

d obstetrics/gynecology. I love what I do but I love even more that I'm blessed to be able to stay home with my little one most of the time. As much as I appreciate my job, my true passion in life is encouraging and teaching others how they can keep moving forward toward a healthy lifestyle. For more on my personal health journey, you can read My Story here: http://happyhealthnutk.blogspot.com/2013/03/my-story.html I believe in a whole-foods based, balanced, unprocessed approach to nutrition. I believe that God created us all amazingly unique and different, and what works for me and my body will be vastly different from what works for you and your body. What works best for me is eating healthy, whole, organic, nourishing, sustainable foods 90% of the time, and letting go and eating chocolate and drinking good wine 10% of the time. I don't believe in "diets" or deprivation. I believe that food can be pleasurable without leaving you feeling guilty. I believe in finding some way to exercise your body that you enjoy and that makes you feel great, whatever that may be, and doing it most days of the week. I believe that a healthy person is not merely someone who is physically healthy, but who is also healthy mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I look forward to continuing to share my health journey with you, and I encourage you to share yours with me.

✨ Does cutting ultra-processed foods automatically mean weight loss?

Not necessarily. Let’s talk about energy balance and why calories still matter—but aren’t the only thing that matters.

At the end of the day, weight loss happens when you’re in a caloric deficit (eating fewer calories than your body burns).

Swapping ultra-processed foods for whole foods can help you naturally eat less, but it doesn’t guarantee weight loss.

Why? Because you can still overeat whole foods and be in a caloric surplus, which will lead to weight gain.

So why is reducing ultra-processed foods so helpful? Most of the reasons (not all) boil down to eating fewer calories without trying AND supporting healthy hormone levels:
🍳 Whole foods are more filling (thanks to fiber, protein, and water content).
🌱 They regulate hunger hormones, so you feel satisfied and don’t overeat.
🔥 They require more energy to digest (thermogenic effect).
❌ Ultra-processed foods are engineered to make you eat more—and to crave more.

The bottom line? Whole foods make it easier to manage your energy balance, but calories still matter!

✨ Swapping ultra-processed foods for real, nourishing options can transform the way you feel, stabilize your energy, and support your goals. Just remember: portion sizes and overall balance still count.

As young as age 6, I can remember standing in ballet class, looking in the mirror and wondering why I was bigger than all of the other girls. I felt like something was wrong with me, or that I was somehow broken, or that God had made a mistake when he created me.

Age 9- I began abusing my body in multiple ways- binging and purging, diet pills, over-exercising- anything I could do to look how I thought I was supposed to look. That behavior continued until I was 21 years old. Throughout those years of disordered eating, I WANTED to heal, and I knew I needed to, but I couldn’t, because I didn’t believe the truth about who I was in Christ.

When I let the knowledge of who I was in HIM, go from a head knowledge to a heart knowledge, everything changed. Although it didn’t happen overnight, I was able to begin to love myself. There are still days I struggle with this- the loving my body part. But there are NO days when I don’t respect and appreciate my body for what it’s capable of and for what it’s done for me.

If you’re still in the place of loathing your body, please know that you can get there too. But you cannot heal a body that you have disdain for. You don’t have to love every aspect of your body everyday, but you can respect and appreciate it. The truth is, your body is brilliantly designed by the creator of the universe to heal itself, when you give it what it needs.

The weight you hold on to.. The symptoms you experience.. Are all designed to protect you.. To keep you safe. I know it does not feel like that in the moment, but that small perspective shift has been so helpful to me over the years, during the times when I’ve felt like I was working against my body, instead of with it.

Start to change your relationship with your body today by acknowledging one thing you love, respect or appreciate about it. I’ll start. I LOVE that my body was able to grow and sustain 3 beautiful, healthy children.

Your turn. Tell us in the comments on thing.

Do you know how to identify hidden sugars in your food labels? It can be tricky, and that is 100% be design, my friends. Food manufacturers want you to be confused, so that you give up on label reading altogether, because you're utterly overwhelmed.

But you can learn to be a savvy label reader! You just need to know what you’re looking for, so you can make an informed decision about whether or not you want to purchase and consume that particular product.

If you find these tips on label reading helpful, I would love if you would like, save and share this post. ❤️

**DELICIOUS HIGH PROTEIN/LOW CARB BREAKFAST ALERT!!

-2/3 cup Kite Hill non-dairy Greek yogurt (or whatever high protein yogurt you like)
-2 scoops Power Meal (vanilla protein-I get this from YL)
-1-2 oz NingXia red
-1/3 cup fresh blueberries
-1 tablespoon almond butter

Friends, this tastes like peanut butter and jelly meets cake batter🍰🫐 YUM!

It has FORTY grams of protein🙌🙌 I always break my fast with protein & fat, and I shoot for a minimum of 30 grams of protein. Why?

30 grams is the minimum amount of protein needed to stimulate mTOR. Ever heard of it?

mTOR stands for mammalian (or mechanistic) target of rapamycin. It’s a signaling pathway in your body that regulates cell growth and metabolism in response to nutrients, growth factor, stress, and cellular energy.

mTOR is a key regular in maintaining skeletal muscle mass! It signals our cells to maintain their working capacity, and increase ATP (the body’s energy currency) production.

BUT, and that’s a big BUT, you don’t want to be signaling mTOR all of the time. Sometimes we want to increase it to grow muscle and improve certain aspects of cognition, while the rest of the time want to have low levels to increase longevity, decrease cancer risk, and reduce inflammation.

You see, mTOR increases energy production, but also creates more waste products for the body to get rid of.

So how do you suppress mTOR?
-Fasting: nothing crazy, just a basic 12 hour ‘rest & digest’.. in other words, stop eating in the evening after dinner, and break your fast 12 hours later.
-exercise- the stress of endurance or light resistance straining is enough to stimulate AMPK, and thus, inhibit mTOR.

What’s your favorite high protein breakfast? Share in the comments!

Guess what we’re doing today?! 😃
We’re making our very first einkorn sourdough starter! I’ve made bread before, but never sourdough 🥰 Y’all know I’m a crunchy kind of gal, but this has been something that has been super intimidating to me! But yesterday I watched my friend Shaye over at make one and she made it look so simple. So we said, “we can do that!” Cheers to doing new things! Follow along in my stories to see this new adventure in bread-making unfold real time 😆
