☀️ Summer Heat & Mental Health Medications ☀️

As temperatures rise in Minnesota, it’s important to know that some antipsychotic medications can make people more sensitive to heat and sunlight. This can increase the risk of sunburn, dehydration, and even heat‑related illness — especially during the warm weeks of summer.

🌿 At Borealis Health wants our community to stay safe and well this season. Here are a few general reminders:

Sun sensitivity — Some medications can make skin burn more quickly.

Heat intolerance — Certain antipsychotics can affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature.

Hydration habits — Staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to support your body in the heat.

Early warning signs — Feeling dizzy, weak, confused, or overheated can be signs to seek medical attention.

If you have questions about how your medication may interact with summer weather, a healthcare professional can help you understand what to watch for and how to stay safe.

🌿 Why Third‑Party Lab Tested Supplements Matter

Choosing supplements shouldn’t feel like guesswork—but in the U.S., supplements are not tested or approved by the FDA before they hit store shelves. That means quality can vary widely, and some products may contain more (or less) than what the label claims, or even contaminants like heavy metals or undeclared drugs. Independent, third‑party testing helps close that gap.

Independent labs verify that:

The ingredients listed on the label are actually in the product, at the stated amounts.

The supplement is free from harmful contaminants such as heavy metals, microbes, pesticides, or undeclared pharmaceuticals.

The product was manufactured in a facility that meets Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Because supplements can be mislabeled—and because the FDA’s enforcement is reactive rather than proactive—third‑party testing is one of the most reliable ways to ensure safety and quality.

🔍 How to Check Whether a Supplement Is Third‑Party Tested
Not all testing is equal. Some brands test only one batch and use that certificate forever. Others test every batch. Here’s how to verify the difference:

1. Look for trusted certification seals
These organizations are considered the gold standard:

USP Verified – Confirms identity, potency, purity, and proper dissolution.

NSF Certified / NSF Certified for Sport – Verifies label accuracy, contaminant limits, and screens for banned substances (Sport program).

Informed Choice / Informed Sport – Screens for banned substances with ongoing surveillance.

BSCG Certified Drug Free – Screens for 500+ substances using Olympic‑level testing methods.

2. Verify the product in the certifier’s online database
Before buying, search the exact product name and strength. Each SKU is certified separately.

3. Check for batch‑specific Certificates of Analysis (COAs)
Batch testing is the strongest form of verification. Look for:
*A COA with a matching lot number
*A recent date
*Confirmation that the finished product (not just raw ingredients) was tested

4. Watch for red flags
“Proprietary blends” without exact dosages

No mention of testing or certification

No COA available upon request

🧠 Why This Matters for Your Health
Research shows supplements without third‑party testing are significantly more likely to contain contaminants or undeclared ingredients.

For people with medical conditions, athletes, those taking prescription medications, or anyone wanting consistent, reliable dosing, third‑party testing is essential—not optional.

At Borealis Health, I help patients choose supplements that are safe, evidence‑based, and aligned with their health goals. If you’re unsure whether a product you’re taking is third‑party tested, bring it to your next appointment—I'm happy to walk through it with you.

🌿 National I Want You to Be Happy Day 🌿

In northern Minnesota, happiness often shows up in the same steady ways we show up for each other — a neighbor helping jump a car on a cold morning, someone scraping the rink before the next group skates, or a quick “hey” in the grocery store aisle.

Today is a reminder that those small moments matter. They lift spirits, strengthen community, and remind us that joy doesn’t have to be loud to be real.

Do something simple today that brings a little light — for yourself or someone else.

Just like a good shift on the ice, the small plays add up.
