Meet Ashleigh Gibson:
By looking at the photo above, could you believe she was in full-blown heart failure?
Residing in Victoria, Ashleigh was preparing to welcome her son when everything changed. Her pregnancy had been relatively normal, aside from gestational diabetes and borderline hyperemesis gravidarum (HG).
Because of a previous heart arrhythmia during childbirth, doctors ordered an ECG and echocardiogram before her induction. Just as they were preparing to break her waters, everything stopped.
A cardiologist told her that her heart function was around 50% and that she needed to be transferred to a more equipped hospital. Further testing showed a 40–45% function and she was diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM).
While sitting and talking with nurses, her heart rate dropped to just 23 beats per minute.
She was transferred to ICU for delivery. After hours of labor, her blood pressure suddenly crashed and she blacked out. That drop triggered active labor, and hours later she delivered her son vaginally with her partner by her side.
For a new mother already fighting for her life, being separated from her newborn brought another kind of pain. Her hour-old son could not stay with her in ICU, and she was told he would need to go home more than two hours away with her partner. She refused to let that happen and continued advocating until her son was allowed to stay as a boarder baby in the NICU.
She was given proper treatment and discharged to go home and recover.
But 18 months later, she became pregnant again. Because of the risks to her heart, her medical team told her she would not survive the pregnancy. She was forced to terminate the pregnancy on medical grounds.
That loss is a wound she still carries.
Today, Ashleigh is now considered fully recovered. She believes that early BNP blood testing and echocardiograms at the first signs of symptoms could help prevent stories like hers and potentially save mothers’ lives.
