🤧 Am I going to get sick from the flu shot?

Courtney Smith PA-C, founder of Grand Primary Care, a Lifestyle Medicine and Family Medicine private practice in Grandville, answers this frequently asked question.

Most flu shots contain inactivated forms of the influenza virus, which can't cause the actual influenza illness. So, you cannot get the flu from the flu shot.
Even though the nasal spray vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, the actual influenza virus in the vaccine is weakened so significantly that it can't cause someone to get the flu.

We know that people can develop flu-like symptoms after receiving a flu shot, for example fever, chills, muscle aches, headache, fatigue, and joint pain. These side effects typically go away within 1-2 days. Even though the side effects are very real, a person experiencing them would test negative for influenza if tested during this time. The symptoms are side effects, but they are not due to having the actual influenza illness.

What different types of flu shots are available this year?

⚪ Standard inactivated influenza vaccine for people age 6 months+
⚪ Live attenuated nasal spray (Flumist) for people age 2-49 years (pregnant people and immunocompromised people should not receive the live attenuated influenza vaccine)
⚪ Egg-free injection (Flublok) for people age 9+
⚪ High-dose injection for people age 65+
⚪ mRNA injection (mFLUSIVA) for people age 50+

Which influenza vaccine is the best one?
Whichever one you actually receive! ANY protection is better than NO protection.

When is the best time to get a flu shot?

💉 It takes approximately 2 weeks for the flu shot to become fully effective.
🤧 Influenza infections typically peak between December and February
🍂 The optimal timing for a flu shot is in September and October, so there is enough time for the body to generate protective antibodies before infections surge.
