Mrs. Debra Selvage Wood, age 72, of Grant, Alabama, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Mrs. Wood was born on March 25, 1954, in Guntersville, Alabama, to Minzo C. and Sadie Walls Selvage. She worked for many years at Hammer's and Fant's department stores in Guntersville, where she served customers in the Toy and Doll Department.

Although she never had children of her own, Mrs. Wood had a special love for children and treated the young customers who visited the store as if they were her own. She found great joy in watching them play with the toys and sharing in their excitement. Her love of dolls extended beyond her work, and she became an avid doll collector.

Mrs. Wood also loved playing the piano and organ. Among her fondest memories were trips to the Smoky Mountains, especially those shared with her husband and her parents.

She will be remembered for her kind and nurturing spirit, her love of music, and the joy she brought to the lives of all who knew her. Her gentle heart and treasured memories will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memories are her sisters, Sharon Pendergrass (Michael) and Teresa Hunter (John); her nieces, Morgan Pendergrass, Madison Pendergrass, and Amy Vermillion (Rob); nephew, Lucas Pendergrass; step-daughters, Michelle Capolino and Christy Costello; and step-grandson, John Capolino. Mr. Kenneth Larry Anderton, age 83 of New Hope, Alabama passed away Friday, August 21, 2026 at Hospice Family Care of Huntsville.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2026 at Honeycomb Free Holiness Church with Bro. Nicholas Nix and Bro. Keith Sutton officiating. Burial will follow in Walker Cemetery in the Hebron Community. The family will receive friends at Honeycomb Free Holiness Church on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 5-8 p.m.

Mr. Anderton is survived by his daughter, Nancy Anderton Allison (Mark); son, Kenneth Cody Anderton (Julie); grandchildren, Kasey Anderton and Ethan Anderton; sister, Betty Todd; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vickey Anderton; daughter, Kimberly Ann Anderton; parents, Curtis O. & Eller Elizabeth Anderton; brothers, Robert Anderton, Thomas Anderton, Leonard Anderton, Edward Anderton, and Arthur Anderton; and sisters, Mary Ruth Geckles and Ruby Moon.

Mrs. Lila Jean Farr, age 83 of the Swearengin Community passed away Friday, August 21, 2026, at Marshall Manor.

Lila Jean was born on February 13, 1943, to Bobby and Mary Lee Stewart. She attended Woodville High School, where she was valedictorian of the Class of 1961. For 26 years, Mrs. Farr worked for the Marshall County Board of Education as a bus driver for KDS DAR School. She will also be remembered as a dedicated member of Swearengin Church of Christ, where she prepared the church bulletin for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Rayman Farr; daughters, Sandy Cooper (Phillip), Jody Gilliland (Joe), Rachel Stubblefield (Brandon), and Pam Gamble; grandchildren, Tanya Cooper, Gavin Gilliland (Greg), and Grayson Gilliland (Cati); brother, Wayne Stewart; sister, Mary Croft; many nieces and nephews; and special nephew, Konnor Stewart. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Farr was preceded in death by her brothers, Bobby Stewart Jr. and Roy Lee Stewart, and her son-in-law, Travis Gamble.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 12-2 p.m. at Grant Memorial Chapel with a funeral service following at 2 p.m. Mark Hastings will officiate the service. Brandon Stubblefield, Joe Gilliland, Grayson Gilliland, Phillip Cooper, Larry Doyle Farr, and Huey Saint will serve as pallbearers for Mrs. Farr. Burial will be in the New Prospect Cemetery in Swearengin.

Mrs. Nancy Henry Maples, age 87 of Grant, Alabama passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Marshall Medical Center North.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Grant Memorial Chapel with Bro. Ollie Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Gunter Mountain Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2026 and from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Maples is survived by her son, Waymon Maples (Dianne); daughter, Beverly Sanders; grandchildren, Stefanie Pereira (Steven), Joel Maples (Amanda), Melissa Sanders Grissom (Steve), and Jason Sanders (Savanna); 11 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and brother, Will Henry (Dory).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ferrell Maples; parents, Preston & Earon Davis Henry; and sister, Martha Nell Shores.

Mr. Johnathan Keith Uptain, age 50 of Grant, Alabama passed away Friday, August 7, 2026.

Funeral services will held at 12 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2026 at Grant Memorial Chapel with Steve Kennamer officiating. Burial will follow in Free Home Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday beginning at 11 a.m.

Johnathan is survived by his mother, Sandra Hall (Kenney); sisters, Kristy Uptain, Emily Underwood, and Christy Dean; aunt, Diane Kirkland; uncle, Deaun Kirkland; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Arba Dell Fultz and Jack Kirkland.

Mr. Matthew Allan “Matt” Nelson, son of COL (Ret) Ray Allan Nelson and Ruth Ann Thompson-Nelson, of Grant AL. Matt was born 30 December 1982 in Clarksville TN; into an Army family. As an “Army Bratt”, Matt moved from Army post to post and was able to see and enjoy life in many areas, including Kentucky, Washington DC, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Germany and around Europe.

Matt died in his sleep 30 July 2026 in Grant AL, following years of illnesses.

Matt was christened a Catholic in 1983 in Clarksville TN. During his last few years, he renewed his faith in Jesus Christ and was actively engaged in St. William Catholic church in Guntersville. He was also an active member in the Knights of Columbus and thoroughly enjoyed helping in fund raising projects and Knight’s activities.

Matt had three brothers with whom he loved to be with. Adam Slaughter of Greenville KY, Aaron Slaughter of Greenville KY and Jeff Nelson of Waverly Hall GA. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Raymond L. Nelson and Betty Lou Comreid-Nelson of Cedar Rapids IA and James Thompson and Kathleen Conner-Thompson of Owensboro KY. Although Matt never married, he was loved and cherished by all his nieces and nephews. He was their “Cool Uncle”.

Mrs. Cecil Ann Leverett, age 77 of Claysville, Alabama went home on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

Ann lived a long happy life loving her kids, grandkids, and great grands. She loved to cook (she was famous for her chicken and dumplings), fishing, playing cards, dancing, and saving any hurt or lost animal-no matter the shape or size.

She was preceded in death by her father, Willie Thomas Byram; mother, Thannie Lee Byram; and sister, Shirley Ann Franks.

Ann is survived by her children, Billy Ray Byram (Donna Cornelius), Franklin Matthew Hand (Angie), Marcus Wayne Hand, Shelia Fay Hand (Bruce Barkley), Shonda Hand Mosley (Randy); step-children, Eugene Cox, Becky Harris, Debbie Sutton, and Betty Smith; brother, Donnie Grindle; 22 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, August 7, 2026 from 12-2 p.m. at Grant Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Anthony Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Cemetery in Claysville.

Leonard was born and grew up near Grant, Alabama.He attended the DAR School for 12 years and graduated from high school in 1953. He drove a school bus the last 2 years (1951-1953).Leonard and Jean Mason married February 14,1953 and moved to the DAR School Grade A Dairy, which they operated from 1953 - 1954. Their first son, Leonard, Jr. was born prematurely (4lbs,10oz) in November 8, 1953. From February 1954 - June 1960 they lived in DeKalb County, Alabama and inspected Grade A Dairies and other duties. He attended night classes at Snead Jr. College: 1957-1960. Their youngest son, James Michael, was born July 26, 1960. From June 1960 - June 1963 they lived in Birmingham and he worked for Alabama Water Improvement Commission while attending evening classes at University of Alabama Engineering Center in Birmingham.

From June 1963-June 1965 they moved to Atlanta and he completed his B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Civil Engineering at Georgia Tech. From June 1965-April1972 he worked as an engineer for the Georgia Water Quality Control Board in Atlanta and moved to DeKalb County, GA to live in 1966. From April 1972 to Oct. 1974 he was appointed by Gov. Jimmy Carter to the position of Deputy Director Georgia Environmental Protection Divisions. In October 1974 Gov. Carter appointed Leonard Director of EPD and he served in that position until 1990. In April 1984 Gov. Joe F. Harris appointed Leonard as commissioner of the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources as...

Reba Snow was born on September 19, 1940. She married the love of her life, James Travis Mayhall, and together they built a home centered on faith, love, hard work, and family. Throughout their years together they created a lifetime of cherished memories.

Reba began her career as an Executive Administrator at Redstone Arsenal before becoming manager at San Ann, where she faithfully served for more than twenty years. She was respected for her kindness, dedication, and strong work ethic. She often worked holidays so others could spend time with their families, always putting others before herself.

Reba found great joy in gardening, faithfully growing food to provide for her family. She delighted in sharing fresh vegetables and home-canned goods with family, friends, and neighbors. Gardening was one of the many ways she expressed her love for others.

Above all, Reba loved Jesus Christ. She faithfully attended church and found great joy in singing the old church hymns. Those timeless songs reflected the hope she carried in her heart and the steadfast trust she placed in her Savior.

Reba’s greatest pride and joy was her family. She was a devoted wife to Travis, and a loving mother to Cindy, Zandra, Timothy, Tammy, and Brad. She also loving raised her grandson, Jeremy, as one of her own. She willingly sacrificed her wants so those she loved would never go without.
