According to a study I completely made up, the more vacations a couple takes each year, the happier their marriage is. šŸ˜‚āœˆļø

I’m no scientist… but I’m also not wrong.

Years of education, thousands of therapy sessions… and I’m still over here reminding myself to take my own advice. šŸ˜‚

Life isn’t always about thriving. Sometimes it’s just about surviving the day, finding a reason to laugh, and trying again tomorrow.

The pigs hear the feed cart, anticipate food, and their bodies shift into a highly activated state. Heart rate increases, adrenaline rises, and self-control becomes much harder.

Humans aren’t that different.

Anticipation, excitement, stress, and anxiety all activate the same nervous system. When we’re activated, we’re more likely to interrupt, react impulsively, or make decisions we normally wouldn’t.

Self-regulation isn’t about never getting activated. It’s about recognizing what’s happening in your body and having the skills to return to a calmer state.

Telling someone with ADHD to ā€˜just focus’ is like telling someone who’s lost their keys to ā€˜just remember where you put them.’ Helpful… but not very effective. šŸ˜‚

One of the funniest parts of being a therapist is genuinely loving that a client is motivated enough to come up with a plan…

…and then spending the next 45 minutes helping them create a completely different one.

Not because their idea is ā€œbad,ā€ but because anxiety, trauma, ADHD, depression, or old survival patterns are usually the ones writing the first draft.

As a therapist, I know emotional regulation is important.

As a parent, sometimes my emotional regulation looks like a 30-second reset in the bathroom before I walk back out smiling like nothing happened. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜‚

Life is already going to ask a lot of you. There will be stress, loss, uncertainty, and challenges you can’t control. That’s why it’s so important to be intentional about what you can control—who you allow into your life.

Choose relationships that feel safe. Choose people who respect your boundaries, celebrate your growth, and bring peace instead of constant chaos. Your nervous system deserves places—and people—where it doesn’t have to stay on high alert.

Protecting your peace isn’t selfish. It’s part of healing.

Self-care isn’t always a bubble bath. Sometimes it’s temporarily abandoning your responsibilities and pretending your only job is deciding what to eat for dinner on vacation. šŸ˜‚āœˆļø

Five days off the grid. No Wi-Fi. No packed schedules. Just dirt, campfires, scraped knees, laughter, and time together.

The laundry might be a little worse when we get home, but the memories will last a lifetime. Childhood isn’t supposed to be spotless. It’s supposed to be messy, adventurous, and full of moments they’ll talk about years from now.

Sometimes the best thing we can give our kids isn’t another activity—it’s our time. Ben Steward
