Autism Through His Eyes

Autism Through His Eyes I am a mother of two cool boys and a wife of 24 years to my high school sweetheart. My oldest son attends the University of Oklahoma. Boomer!
(2)

Come along on our journey to better understand our lives through the eyes of a boy with autism, his Skilled Companion dog Jude, his big brother (and best friend) and mom and dad. My youngest is diagnosed with Autism and Mixed Receptive Expressive Disorder at age 2. Since his diagnosis, I promised him I would advocate and educate as hard as he works each day in therapy. I began writing and have bee

n able to touch many parents that may be new to this journey providing them with actual experiences (not candy coated), support and resources through my entries. Writing is my own therapy and my hopes are that my raw vulnerability captures the everyday moments of our journey and will bring even more acceptance.

It’s time for me to step back, take a break from social media and soak in the precious upcoming moments of the holiday season.

I plan to spend time with loved ones, find time to pause, recharge, and be present in the magic of now.

Let’s reconnect in the New Year! Until then wishing you a season filled with warmth, joy and rest.

See you in 2026!

Often people think CR is not paying attention to people and surroundings in a room. But let me tell you, he’s paying more attention than anyone in there.

He has shared memories that we have done or even said days, months sometimes years later already with us.

When it comes to detail in a room, he scans and studies even when you think he is not paying attention.

Over the weekend, we were out of town and we had a cabinet full of our pantry items. My mother-in-law put several out on a table for breakfast and when we came back into the room, we noticed he put them all back on the shelf where they once were.

Recently, the introduction to the Today Show or the credits at the end of a PBS show he has also has memorized and will recite. It’s so fascinating because those are triggers for me to tune out, ignore or move on to what I will be doing next.

With or without eye contact, he is not only paying attention to what is happening in a room, what people are saying but also observant to the detail of the room too.
