Are you part of the 1 in 3?

One in three American adults has fat in their liver, and 96% of them don’t know it. In this episode of The Gut Insiders, Chuck and I break down fatty liver disease (MASLD, formerly called NAFLD): why metabolism, not alcohol, now drives it, why being thin doesn’t protect you, and how you can check for it and reverse it.

Dr B shares the story of a thin runner who came to him for bloating, and the skin sign on her neck that told him something else was going on. You’ll learn about the liver score hiding in your routine blood work (the FIB-4), the number that means it’s time for a FibroScan, and the groups of people who should get tested.

They also dig into a brand-new study in the journal Gut where gut bacteria transferred fatty liver from one mouse to another. I explain what Akkermansia and your gut barrier have to do with protecting your liver. Then I walk you through five evidence-based ways to reduce liver fat. These include one habit that cut liver fat even without weight loss, and the daily drink that doubled liver fat in six months.

Fatty liver isn’t just a liver problem. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in people with fatty liver. Send this to someone you love, especially the one who thinks they’re too thin to worry.

Inflammation is one of the most talked-about topics in health — and one of the least understood. Most people blame aging, stress, or genetics. But there's a more specific answer, and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

In this episode of The Gut Insiders, Dr. B explains where chronic inflammation actually starts, why eating clean isn't always enough to stop it, and what he calls the "inflammation trap" — the self-reinforcing cycle that keeps people stuck no matter what they try.

Chuck Carroll opens up about his own three-year battle with chronic illness, brain fog, joint pain, and symptoms that stumped doctors at the Mayo Clinic — and Dr. B explains why it all connects back to one place.

If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right and still feel like garbage, this episode is for you.

Social contagion!
We have all experienced this. We join a social group…run club, hike club, book club, etc. We feel like we need to go all in…go to all the events, join in on all the online chat groups. Stay 100% engaged. It can be exhausting.
It’s ok to limit yourself. Say no, and still remain engaged.

Also discussed is holding on to the “just in case” objects! For example, “I’m going to hold onto these books, just in case I decide to read them some day.”
They provide some realistic guidelines on how to handle the “just-in-case” items.

I knew that coffee had some health benefits but apparently more than I originally understood. Dont go putting a lot of sugar and creamer in it, unless its Folgers or Maxwell House, that stuff is just plain nasty!

Here is some insight from Dr B, The Gut Health MD:
Most people think coffee is just caffeine. But as a gastroenterologist, I see something completely different in that morning cup.

Coffee contains over 1,000 bioactive compounds — including soluble fiber, polyphenols, and melanoidins — that reach your colon and feed your gut microbiome. In fact, one study analyzing over 22,000 participants found that of 150+ foods studied, coffee had the single strongest correlation with gut microbiome composition.

But there's a catch. When you drink it matters just as much as whether you drink it. And not everyone should.

I'll walk you through who benefits, who should cut back, and the one timing mistake that could be canceling out coffee's protective effects entirely.

Dr. B's new book, "Plant Powered Plus," is available now: https://www.amazon.com/Plant-Powered-...

Excess sugar consumption from an ultra-processed diet is the primary driver of inflammation, insulin resistance, and the many chronic diseases that come with it. With over 60 percent of Americans’ calories coming from “food-like” products, we’ve landed so deep into the trenches of sugar addiction that real change will require realistic, scalable steps to help people get off sugar for good.

In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Lustig dive into:
-What to expect after you significantly cut down on added sugar (3:04)
-The safest level of sugar to consume (8:12)
-The effects of large amounts of sugar inside the body (33:21)
-Sugar as the main driver of metabolic disease (40:06)
-How mitochondrial health impacts metabolic health (44:30)
-Eight drivers of disease and how to fight them (50:05)
-Omega-3 fats for cellular health (57:45)
-The role of omega-6 fats in creating health and disease (1:04:26)
-Gut health as a primary source of chronic inflammation (1:10:15)
-Should ultra-processed food be considered real food? (1:20:17)
-Dietary recommendations for safe sugar consumption (1:32:51)
-Recommendations for “safely” drinking alcohol (1:37:00)
-Why the makeup of our calories matters (1:44:03)
-Thin on the outside, fat on the inside (TOFI) (1:47:52)
-The three sites of fat deposition in the body (1:50:18)
-Findings from the SHINE study (1:56:36)
-The Metabolic Matrix (feed the gut, protect the liver, and support the brain) (2:07:45)
-Future directions for processed food and government policy (2:27:50)
