Annoyance is the Price You Pay for Good Relationships. A response to: Are Therapists to Blame for the Rise of Adults Cutting Off Their Parents?

Here’s something I wish more people understood: annoyance is not a red flag. It’s the tax you pay for being in a relationship with another imperfect human being. Your mom will say something that lands wrong. Your dad will bring up something you’ve asked him to drop a hundred times. Your sibling will forget your birthday again. If your bar for “this relationship is harmful” is “this relationship sometimes frustrates me,” you’re going to end up alone, because every relationship worth having will frustrate you sometimes. So when is it a good time to cut out that toxic family member? That is for you to decide, not your therapist.
