🐹 A little enrichment goes a long way! 🌿

Enrichment toys are a great way to keep small mammals mentally stimulated, physically active, and engaged in their environment. And the best part? They don't have to be expensive or complicated!

Our office manager, Michelle, got creative and made these adorable DIY enrichment toys. Dr. Rowe's personal guinea pigs are thorougly enjoying her handiwork! Using simple materials like hay, cardboard, and other pet-safe supplies, she created fun ways to encourage natural behaviors like foraging, exploring, and chewing.

Many of our small mammal patients need assisted or syringe feedings when they’re feeling unwell. These feedings are an important part of supportive care and can take anywhere from 10–15 minutes per patient to perform slowly and safely.

Often patients require quite a bit of patience, encouragement, and coaxing from our team. It may look like a simple task, but assisted feeding is just one of the many ways our technicians provide hands-on nursing care throughout the day.

Dr. Welle and Angelina recently teamed up to complete exams on coati siblings, Whip and Pip! 🐾

Also known as coatimundis, coatis are highly intelligent, social, curious, and active animals with complex behavioral and environmental needs. While their playful personalities and adorable faces can make them appealing as exotic companions, caring for a coati responsibly requires a significant commitment to their long-term welfare.

Coatis need spacious, secure environments, extensive enrichment, opportunities to express natural behaviors, and a carefully managed diet. Their needs also change as they mature, making knowledgeable, proactive veterinary care an important part of responsible ownership.

We were so happy to spend some time with Whip and Pip and appreciate their owners’ dedication to providing them with the specialized care and environment they need to thrive. Animals like these are a wonderful reminder of why education, preparation, and responsible ownership are so important when caring for exotic species.

It often takes multiple sets of hands to safely complete a procedure, and when your patient is this small, space can get tight very quickly!

From monitoring and positioning to assisting the veterinarian and keeping everything moving smoothly, every person around the table has an important job to do. Exotic animal medicine is truly a team effort and sometimes we just have to get a little cozy while doing it!

When possible, injections in reptiles are typically given in the front half of the body, including the front legs. This is because reptiles have a unique renal portal system that can affect how substances administered to the rear half of the body circulate through the kidneys.

It’s one of the many ways reptile anatomy differs from that of dogs and cats and one of the little details that matters when providing specialized care for these patients!

Sometimes you look at an X-ray and have more questions than answers… 🐍⛳

This incredible case comes from our sister hospital, South Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital in San Antonio, and we couldn’t resist sharing it!

This snake had somehow managed to swallow THREE golf balls. Thankfully, surgery was avoided. With the patient heavily sedated, our veterinary team was able to carefully manipulate and safely remove all three golf balls manually.

This was definitely a memorable case! You never quite know what’s going to come (slithering) through the doors in exotic animal medicine!
