Most children don’t report s*xual abuse when it’s happening—and it’s not because they don’t want help. It’s because they’re scared, confused, and often manipulated into silence.

These are the real thoughts many children carry:

• “He said he’d hurt my siblings.”
• “He said he’d kill my mom.”
• “He said I’d go to jail.”
• “He threatened to do it again…”
• “I was afraid.”
• “I thought it was my fault.”
• “I didn’t understand.”
• “We never talked about s*x in my family.”
• “Everyone would be mad.”
• “I didn’t want anyone to know.”

Abuse thrives in silence—and offenders rely on fear, shame, and secrecy to keep children from speaking up.

That’s why these conversations matter. When we talk openly with children about body safety, safe vs. unsafe secrets, and who they can go to for help, we take away the power of that silence.

💙 If a child doesn’t tell right away, it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
💙 It means they didn’t feel safe enough to tell—yet.

Let’s be the safe, trusted adults who listen, believe, and protect.

As a community we are heart broken for the loss of Rubi Perez. During this time please be kind to all involved in this tragedy. The family needs prayers for their heartbreak and profound loss. The 1st responders need compassion for the scene they witnessed as well as the difficulties they will continue to face with the investigation. Friends and fellow students are struggling with pain and loss without her presence.
Our community always comes together during these times as we should. Should anyone need emotional support during this critical and sad time reach out to community resources for help.
Here are some Crisis trained resources: Center for Counseling, Heart of Kansas, Avenues for Change, Vision Quest, Willow Tree, as well as all of us at Passages of Hope Counseling Center.
🙏🏻 for all involved..

Playing Tetris after a traumatic event may help reduce intrusive memories and alleviate symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. Studies suggest playing Tetris within a few hours of trauma exposure for at least 20 minutes can interrupt memory formation and reduce flashbacks. To use Tetris as a tool for trauma interventions you need to act quickly (play Tetris within six hours of the traumatic event), keep it simple (download Tetris in advance for easy access), and combine tools (use Tetris along with other mental health interventions for best outcomes). Tetris visuospatial tasks occupy the brain's resources, interfering with the consolidation of traumatic memories. Playing the game is so visually stimulating and requires both hands so it makes it harder for you to form permanent visual memories of what you have experienced or witnessed.
