Herbal First Aid in Action 🔥Burns

A friend of mine got a nasty burn, and we reached for three trusted allies from the apothecary shelf, Forest Guardian Salve! Cottonwood, Usnea, and Dragon's Blood. Twenty four hours later, the difference speaks for itself.

Cottonwood buds are rich in resins traditionally valued for calming inflammation and easing pain right at the site of injury. Herbalists have long turned to this tree for its soothing, protective qualities on irritated or damaged skin.

Usnea is a lichen with a long history of traditional use for supporting the body against microbial challenge, making it a wise choice anytime skin integrity is compromised. Its gentle astringent nature also helps manage weeping or oozing tissue.

Dragon's Blood resin is treasured across traditional herbal systems as a vulnerary, meaning it has long been used to support the skin's natural ability to close and rebuild. It forms a protective layer over the area while the body does its work underneath.

Together these three plant allies cover the full spectrum of traditional burn care as they are calming, protecting, and rebuilding. Nature really does provide what we need, we just have to know where to look.

This is my piece of paradise 🌾 Veggies and medicinals growing side by side, because that's how it's supposed to work.

On the medicinal side: chamomile, skullcap, Siberian motherwort, blue vervain, elecampane, California poppy, calendula, valerian, comfrey, borage, lemon balm, marshmallow, echinacea, bee balm, lavender, holy basil, white sage, blue spice basil, yarrow, plantain, St John's Wort and horseradish. Even to***co has its place here.

And the harvest: Italian grape tomatoes (A Grappoli D'Inverno), Tlacolula Pink, Sunrise Bumblebee, Tiger Blush, and Old Carolina tomatoes, buttercup, sweet dumpling, and Indomatrone squash, onions, celery, marigolds, and a whole rainbow of peppers, Cubano, Aji, banana, pepperoncini, bell peppers of every color, tangerine bell, and jalapeño.

Nothing here is just for show. It's food, it's medicine, it's peace. Even Barbara and Matilde agree, they can't get enough of the squash leaves 😄

Anyone can read a few books and start calling themselves an herbalist, but a good herbalist truly walks the talk. Here are some things I always encourage people to look for.

First and foremost- We carry a lineage. Herbalism has always been passed down, teacher to student, hand to hand. It matters who someone trained under and where their knowledge actually comes from. I carry my own lineage through my education with the East West School of Herbology, the School of Natural Healing, the Evolutionary School of Herbalism, the Dandelion Herbal Center, and the California School of Herbal Studies. A good herbalist can name their teachers and trace where their knowledge comes from, not just point to a highlight reel.

A word about the rise of TikTok and YouTube herbalism, because I think it needs saying. A fifteen second clip with a trending sound is not the same as years of hands on relationship with a plant. Anyone can memorize a few talking points and sound confident on camera, but confidence is not the same as competence. This becomes especially important when someone is stepping into a role of guiding a community, because bad information does not just affect one person, it spreads. Herbalism carries real responsibility. Dosage matters, contraindications matter, individual constitution matters, and none of that comes through in a viral video optimized for engagement rather than accuracy. Before you take guidance from someone online or in person, ask how long they have actually practiced, who they trained under or apprenticed with, and whether they can speak to nuance rather than just repeating a trend. The plants deserve better than being reduced to a soundbite, and so do the people trusting that advice with their health.

Do they truly live the lifestyle? A good herbalist usually incorporates herbs, whole foods, and natural living into their own daily life. You’ll often see that they cook from scratch, work with plants regularly, and use herbal remedies in their own home. They don’t just talk about herbs they actually live with them!

It’s also okay to pay attention to how someone shows up physically. While none of us are perfect and everyone has their own health journey, an herbalist who truly lives this lifestyle often reflects that in their overall appearance. Healthy skin, clear eyes, good energy, and a sense of vitality are often signs that someone is actually practicing what they teach. Herbalism is about nourishment, balance, and long-term wellness, and when someone genuinely walks that path, it tends to show..
They have long-term experience with plants. Herbs are learned through years of observation and practice. Look for someone who has spent significant time studying, growing, wildcrafting, or making herbal preparations like teas, tinctures, salves, or vinegars.

They focus on education, not just selling products. A trustworthy herbalist wants you to understand the plants and your body. They’ll explain why they recommend something and encourage you to learn, rather than pushing a quick fix.
They respect the body’s natural processes. Herbalism is usually about supporting the body gently over time, not forcing dramatic or overnight changes. A good herbalist talks about nourishment, balance, and supporting the body’s systems.
They use quality herbs. Good herbalists care deeply about where their herbs come from. They often grow their own, source from reputable suppliers, or wildcraft responsibly. Quality and freshness matter.

They are transparent. They can tell you what’s in their formulas, where the herbs came from, and how they were prepared. Nothing is mysterious or secret.

They listen. A real herbalist spends time understanding the person their diet, lifestyle, stress, digestion, sleep, and environment. Herbalism is very individualized.
And honestly, one of the biggest things is humility and respect for the plants. The best herbalists know they are always learning. Plants are teachers, and good herbalists stay curious and open.

If you ever feel pressured, rushed, or like someone is selling you miracle cures, that’s usually a red flag. A good herbalist feels more like a guide and educator than a salesperson.

At the end of the day, herbalism is a relationship with the plants and with the people we serve. A good herbalist isn’t chasing trends or promising miracles. They are someone who studies, practices, listens, and continues learning from the plants year after year. The plants deserve that level of respect, and so do the people who come to us for guidance.

What are some things you look for in a good herbalist? Experience? Lifestyle? Connection to the plants? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

1,800 of you 🌿 that number just floors me. Thank you for growing with Berry and Blossom, for showing up at the booth, for trusting me with your plant medicine journey. Let's talk hydrosols 🌿💧 and let's celebrate 1,800 of you while we're at it!

Hydrosols are the aromatic water that comes off the still (the copper alembic pictured) alongside essential oil during steam distillation. They carry the water soluble constituents of the plant, gentler than an essential oil but still full of the plant's living properties. Because they're water based, they need to be kept in the fridge, this keeps them fresh and extends their shelf life, especially with more delicate florals like rose and lilac which have a shorter window than woodier hydrosols like palo santo.

Ways to use a hydrosol:
✨ Facial toner or mist, spritz after cleansing to balance and refresh skin
✨ Linen and room spray
✨ Add to bath water for a gentle aromatic soak
✨ Diluted in cooking or drinking water for a subtle flavor and folk remedy boost (always use a hydrosol labeled safe for internal use, not all are)

🌸 Lilac Hydrosol, last of our supply
This is from last year's harvest, our lilacs didn't bloom this year so there wasnt a fresh batch to make. Once this supply is gone it's gone until we see how next spring's bloom turns out, fingers crossed for a better crop.
As a facial toner, lilac is a favorite. It soothes irritation and calms redness and inflammation, while hydrating and refreshing the skin, boosting moisture levels and leaving your complexion soft and supple. Think of it as giving your skin a drink of water. Many people love it for softening the look of fine lines and puffiness too. Energetically, lilac carries a soft, heart opening quality tied to remembrance and tenderness.

🌵 Palo Santo Hydrosol
Palo Santo, holy wood, has been used for generations in South American folk tradition for spiritual cleansing and purification. The hydrosol gives you that same grounding, resinous aroma as a smokeless alternative. Folk use includes calming and grounding the nervous system, easing tension, and clearing stagnant energy from a space or the aura.

And because we just hit 1,800 of you following along on this journey, we're celebrating with a giveaway 🌿 One winner will receive a 2oz spray bottle of Lilac Hydrosol and a 2oz spray bottle of Palo Santo, winner's choice!

Come see us this Saturday September 5 from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM! You will find me in my usual spot at the Downtowner, across from the Celtic Cowboy, Booth D25. This will probably be our last market of the season, as I am booked with workshops!

For those who are new here, I'm Dina, the herbalist behind Berry & Blossom Apothecary. I've been working with herbs since 1996 and have spent many years studying, creating, teaching, and sharing the beauty of plant medicine with my community.
I also bring over 20 years in the natural products industry, and I currently work with Organic 3, Inc, makers of Smidge® and the U.S. distributor of Rosita®. That work has shaped so much of how I think about gut health, traditional foods, and nutrition, and how herbs fit into the bigger picture of wellness.

As a certified Nutritional Herbalist, my work is rooted in traditional herbalism and in helping people feel more connected to the plants growing all around us. I'm also a certified GAPS coach ( Gut And Psychology Syndrome) and a certified Astro Herbalist! Both feel like such meaningful steps in my own journey, and I'm looking forward to weaving them more into the work I do here, gut healing and traditional foods on one hand, and the seasonal, cyclical wisdom of herbs and the stars on the other.
I'm so grateful to be part of this market community again this year. One of my favorite parts of market season is seeing familiar faces, meeting new people, answering questions, and sharing teas and botanical creations made with care.

Whether you're stopping by for an old favorite, curious about herbs, or just want to say hello, I would love to see you! You can also message me here or reach me at 541 640 9998.

Testimonial Tuesday! Nothing makes my day quite like this. This review from Khaos means the world to me. There is something so special about watching a salve do what Benadryl, and even prescriptions, could not. The lilac, calendula, and comfrey salve was made to soothe exactly this kind of angry, stubborn skin, and reading how fast it worked brings me right back to why I started this whole journey in the first place. This is what plant medicine does. It meets the body where it is and gets to work.

Thank you, Khaos, for trusting me with your skin and for taking the time to share your experience. Reviews like this remind me why I keep doing what I do.

If you have a story about how one of my offerings has helped you, I would love to hear it. Drop it in the comments or send me a message.
