The UNCCRI is recognized as a frontrunner in the field of cancer rehabilitation. Thus, she and her physician began exploring the literature to find answers.

Our expertise has been developed by delivering clinical cancer rehabilitation services, providing educational opportunities and experiences in rehabilitation and research! About UNCCRI:

Cancer and the side effects of cancer treatments leave patients struggling to regain the quality of life they experienced before cancer diagnosis. The majority of patients will experience an array of symptoms such

as nausea, pain, fatigue, and depression to name just a few. Carole Schneider, founding UNCCRI Director, became interested in using exercise and nutrition as an intervention for cancer rehabilitation because of personal experiences. Carole was diagnosed with cancer and received extensive external and internal radiation, which left her struggling with many side effects especially fatigue and muscle weakness. There appeared to be no answers to help her overcome the negative effects of radiation. While investigating the possible interventions to alleviate Carole’s symptoms, they found that the negative cancer treatment toxicities were closely related to the positive effects that are observed with exercise. They investigated further and found that there was minimal information on post cancer treatment interventions with most information being on the treatment of psychological effects. They began asking themselves, “what interventions could alleviate the physiological side effects of cancer treatments.” Since the beneficial effects of exercise closely mirrored the negative effects of cancer treatment side effects, they decided to begin UNCCRI (formerly RMCRI) to help cancer survivors regain the quality of life they had before cancer through exercise and nutrition interventions. Carole was the first cancer survivor in the Institute and the program helped her regain her health and feel “well” again. Since that time they have worked with hundreds of cancer survivors and have found significant improvements both physiologically and psychologically in their patients. Consistently, they found that patients during and following treatment improve their functional work capacity, muscular strength and endurance, range of motion, pulmonary function, balance, and agility with concomitant decreases in fatigue and depression following an individualized prescriptive exercise and nutrition intervention.

Q: Why did you choose to become a part of the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute?
A: I chose to become a part of the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute because I wanted to be involved in a community that is passionate about improving the lives of cancer survivors through compassionate, evidence-based care. This internship has provided me with countless opportunities to learn, grow, and develop both personally and professionally. I have gained valuable hands-on experience, worked alongside an inspiring interdisciplinary team, and strengthened my passion for rehabilitation and patient-centered care. Being part of this community has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I am grateful for everything I have learned.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your experience?
A: How fulfilling it is to see my patients reach and exceed their goals, and being the best part of their day, and in return they are the best part of mine.

Q: How will your experience at the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute impact your future career?
A: I would absolutely love to further my knowledge and experience within this field whether it be oncology or rehabilitation settings.

Where are you from?
A: Rapid City, South Dakota

Q: What’s a fun fact about you?
A: I was a pole vaulter on the CSU Track and Field team.

Q: Why did you choose to become a part of the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute?
A: I really wanted an internship that would allow me to gain hands-on experience over the summertime. The ability to work directly with patients and the opportunities to learn from past specialists, research coordinators, program directors, and physical therapists is what really drew me to apply at UNCCRI.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your experience?
A: The most rewarding thing about this experience is watching my patients progress throughout our training. Increasing weights week after week, improving their balance, performing exercises they didn’t think they’d be capable of, building confidence, improving quality of life, and hearing their stories. I’ve had several patients thank us for the work we do at UNCCRI, but the patients here who continually show up, work hard, and push themselves despite life events or treatment side effects inspire me greatly and remind me to be thankful for the things in life we often take for granted.
(I also really have enjoyed our intern group and the endless games of volleyball, spike ball, hacky sack, pickleball, and among us we’ve managed to play throughout the summer)

Q: How will your experience at the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute impact your future career?
A: Over this summer I’ve become a lot more comfortable taking vitals and working directly with patients which will help me succeed in a hospital setting - which is where I hope to work next in order to gain clinical hours for PA school. Hopefully, I’ll be fortunate enough to work with cancer patients again in the near future 🙂

A: I heard great things about the internship experience and wanted to complete an internship that allowed me to get hands on experience with a unique patient group.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your experience?
A: I’ve enjoyed learning how to perform patient assessments and improve my clinical skills. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know my patients. I’ve enjoyed seeing my patients improve and feel more capable during their cancer journey.

Q: How will your experience at the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute impact your future?
A: I hope to work as a Clinical exercise psychologist in the future, this internship has helped me develop baseline clinical skills and has given me a good introduction to what working with patients is like.

A: My interest in this field came from an exercise oncology course I completed this past summer, which gave me a strong foundation and passion for the subject. When I began searching for an internship, I discovered that the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute is widely regarded as the birthplace of exercise oncology. The opportunity to learn directly from the pioneers of this field made it an exceptional and compelling choice for my professional development.

A: I’ve enjoyed comradery with my fellow interns and getting to make my patients better everyday

A: I chose to intern with the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute because I wanted to gain experience in a well-established, accredited setting while taking on meaningful responsibilities involving patient care. Additionally, my uncle passed away from cancer shortly before the start of my internship, which further motivated me to contribute to this field and support others affected by the disease.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your experience?
A: I have most enjoyed the connections I have built with both patients and fellow interns. The clinic fosters a strong sense of community and provides a welcoming, supportive environment. I have also valued the educational component of the program, particularly gaining a deeper understanding of cancer and the challenges patients face daily. Furthermore, the guidance and support from our supervisors have made the internship both engaging and highly educational.

A: My experience at the Cancer Rehabilitation Institute will have a significant impact on my future career as a CRNA. Developing strong patient rapport and learning how to effectively care for and communicate with patients are essential skills I will use daily. A: I am from Aroura, Colorado.

Q: What’s a fun fact about you?
A: I have read every single book in the Dune series. I am also on the UNCO cross country and track team.

Q: Why did you choose to become a part of the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute?
A: I chose to become a part of the UNCCRI because of my grampa who was diagnosed with cancer in early 2022. This led me to the Rehabilitation Institute in search of what I can do with my degree to help those in my life and future career.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your experience?
A: I have enjoyed building deep connections with my patients and learning more about their life and how cancer has affected them. I enjoy seeing the progress of each of my patients as they get stronger at the UNCCRI.

A: The UNCCRI has given me hands on experience that I will apply in a long career of rehabilitation. The Rehabilitation Institute has helped me build lifelong connections as well as enough life lessons to last a lifetime.

A: I was drawn to UNCCRI because it gives me the opportunity to gain real-world experience and put my knowledge into practice. It also stood out to me for its encouraging atmosphere, where I’m supported by people who are invested in both my personal and professional development.

A: Other than I can speak, read and write in 4 languages, I’m also pretty good at games that involve mind work.

Q: Why did you choose to become a part of the
UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute?
A: It’s an interesting place and I don’t think exercise regimen is something that is often prescribed to cancer patients. I also witnessed the decline and death of my aunt to multiple different cancers after fighting it for 3/4 years.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your experience?
A: The people who work and my fellow interns, the patients are also amazing and it’s a wonderful experience to see and be a part of their recovery.

A: I plan on getting my graduate degree and having insight into what I’ll one day do and be part of the leadership is satisfying.

Q: Where are you from?
A: I’m from the 757, Virginia Beach baby ‼️

Q: What’s a fun fact about you?
A: I’ve never lost a game in anagrams or word hunt. And I was top 1000 players in Fortnite at one point

Q: Why did you choose to become a part of the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute?
A: I chose to be a part of the unc cancer institute because of my interest in oncology and being able to work one on one with patients. I also wanted to work with a different population to expand my career in physical therapy.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your experience?
A: I enjoyed smoking everyone in spikeball and pickleball. I also enjoyed spending time with the people, staff and patients everyday. Seeing patients’ progress and hearing their life stories and receiving countless donuts was also a bonus. Overall there was never a dull day with this experience.

Q: How will your experience at the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Institute impact your future career?
A: Interning here and working closely with patients, I have developed a deeper sense of compassion, learning how to support individuals not just physically, but emotionally with their recovery journey. This experience has also allowed me to better understand the science of cancer, including how the disease and its treatments affect the body over time. I’m hoping I can work in oncology or in the rehab field after receiving my PT degree.
