A beautiful depiction of this sacred sabbat. 🪾🍁🍂🫶

As October draws to a close, we approach one of the most sacred and mysterious celebrations of the Wheel of the Year.

Samhain, pronounced Sow-en, is rooted in ancient Gaelic traditions and marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. For many modern Pagans, it is also celebrated as the Witch's New Year.

It is a time when the final harvest has been gathered, the fields have grown quiet, and the natural world begins its long descent into winter.

But Samhain is about far more than the changing seasons.

In Celtic tradition, this was a liminal time, when the boundaries between the ordinary world and the Otherworld were believed to grow less distinct. In modern spiritual practice, this understanding often takes the form of honoring our ancestors and recognizing the enduring connection between the living and those who came before us.

Within some traditions of the Wheel of the Year, Samhain also tells the story of the dying Sun God, whose return at Yule symbolizes the renewal of light. It is a sacred reflection of the eternal cycles of life, death, and rebirth.

And perhaps one of Samhain's greatest teachings is that darkness has a purpose of its own.

Beneath the fallen leaves, the earth is already preparing for what comes next. Seeds lie dormant. Roots continue their unseen work. What has reached the end of its life begins nourishing something new.

There is no great struggle against the darkness in nature. It is welcomed as part of the cycle.

Samhain invites us to consider our place within that same rhythm.

To honor those whose lives made our own possible.

To recognize the wisdom gathered through another year.

To acknowledge endings without diminishing the beauty of what once was.

And to understand that rest, stillness, and the unknown are just as sacred as growth and abundance.

The Wheel does not stop when the light fades. Its mysteries simply unfold in different ways.

As we approach Samhain, what traditions or rituals help you connect with the meaning of this sacred time?
