Itâs amazing the effect that postural corrections can have on the body.
𤰠Baby in the Basket: Can you believe these images were taken seconds apart!?!
Pregnancy brings incredible changes to the body, and as your baby grows, finding a comfortable, well-aligned standing posture can become increasingly challenging.
Pictured is Alison Massopust, who is a CFMT and an instructor for IPA, while she was 30 weeks pregnant with twin daughters! She is demonstrating the power of using a postural correction technique that was developed and named by Cheryl Wardlaw (IPA instructor and overall legend), which is called âBaby in the Basketâ.
The âBaby in the Basketâ postural correction helps expectant mothers take control of their bodies through finding a more balanced, supported position, which allows them to progress through pregnancy with less low back pain, less pain in other parts of their bodies, and less likelihood of developing a diastasis recti.
Here's how to perform it:
⨠Find even weight bearing through both feet.
⨠While gently cradling the belly, allow the pelvis to move back and down, encouraging the baby to relax into the pelvic bowl.
⨠Reposition the rib cage so it is stacked directly over the pelvis.
⨠Finish by allowing the shoulder blades to settle down and back over the rib cage.
This sequence can help promote improved alignment, reduce unnecessary tension, and encourage the body to work more efficiently throughout pregnancy. Small changes in posture can often make a big difference in comfort and movement.
As always, every pregnancy is unique. If you experience pain or have concerns, consult with your healthcare provider or a physical therapist experienced in treating pregnancy-related conditions.
Have you used the "Baby in the Basket" strategy with your patients? We'd love to hear how you've incorporated it into your clinical practice! đ
