Proud of my little goslings, Steph and Erin, who’ve really come into their own.

They Tyvek’d up and took on a nasty scene. Hot, messy, uncomfortable…and they handled it like the badasses they are.

It’s not glamorous. It’s not easy. And yeah… sometimes it’s “smelly, sweaty bitch” level work. But they showed up and did it right.

Also…very grateful I had the day off. 😜 🤢

Job perk?

Got pulled over for speeding while out shopping with my daughter. The officer ran my license and came back and said:

“You an investigator with the medical examiner’s office?”
“Yup.”
“When I ran your name, all the incidents said: death scene, death scene, death scene…”
“Sounds about right.”
(Laughs) “Well, I’ll make note that we chatted and ask that you slow down a bit.”

Pretty sure he got to the end of my file and landed on the obvious conclusion: “She’s seen some sh*t…let her go.”

Liver disease isn’t always obvious. You can watch for smaller things that may stand out first.

- Red palms that can show changes in hormone levels cause blood vessels in the hands to dilate.

- Faint, spider-like vessels across the chest. Small vessels that expand and branch outward over time.

- A stomach that looks swollen, but arms that don’t match. Fluid building in the abdomen while the rest of the body loses muscle.

- Bruises that don’t quite make sense. When the body doesn’t clot as well, even minor bumps can leave marks.

On their own, they can mean a lot of different things. But together…they start pointing in the same direction.

Trinity Church in Manhattan, NYC, was simply amazing. Standing at the grave of one of the Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton, was surreal, one of those moments where history suddenly feels very real.

A parachute coat.

Franz Reichelt was a tailor who spent years designing a wearable parachute for aviators. His earlier tests failed—his prototypes dropped like a stone, and one attempt even left him with a broken leg.

He believed height was the missing piece.

In 1912, he jumped from the Eiffel Tower to prove it.

It didn’t open. He died instantly from the impact.

He never made it off the set.

Jerome Irving Rodale was a publisher and early advocate for organic living. During a 1971 taping of The Dick Cavett Show, he spoke about his health, confidently stating he expected to live to 100.
Moments later, he suffered a fatal heart attack on stage.

The episode was never aired.

Just one day earlier, he had appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine.

Some chapters in late-night history are darker than others—as Dick Cavett learned the hard way on June 8, 1971.

“Time of death: 1:00 PM.”

That’s how it sounds on TV.

Reality is…we almost never have an exact time of death, unless it happens in a hospital, or someone is right there when it occurs.

If death is recent, we may narrow it down to a general timeframe. But even then, it’s still an estimate, not an exact moment.

Otherwise, we’re working with ranges based on things like rigor, lividity, scene conditions, and last known well.

Two people can die at the same time and look very different hours later. Or look the same, and have died hours apart.

So when you hear an exact time on TV…just imagine a faint background noise of medical examiners and death investigators laughing.

There are things you can see on the body, long before death, that can point to heart disease.

Before we ever know medical history, there are signs we may recognize on scene, things that were often present while someone was still living.

- Fingertips that become rounded with nails curving downward (clubbing)

- A diagonal crease across the earlobe (Frank’s sign), a subtle finding that’s been linked to heart disease

- Lower legs that appear darker, shiny, or have lost hair from poor circulation

- Skin over the shins that can look tight or glossy from long-term circulation issues

They don’t diagnose anything on their own.

But they’re often part of the bigger picture.
