Happy 36th Anniversary, ADA! 🎉

Today we're celebrating 36 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—a landmark civil rights law that helped open doors to greater access, opportunity, and inclusion for people with disabilities.

At Options, the ADA isn't just history. It's part of our everyday work.

Each day, we help people navigate accommodations, advocate for accessibility, explore assistive technology, learn independent living skills, and build the confidence to speak up for what they need. We work alongside individuals, families, businesses, schools, and communities because accessibility benefits everyone.

We're especially proud that our own Assistant Director, Sandy Popp, traveled to Washington, D.C., in 1990 to meet with legislators and advocate for the passage of the ADA. That legacy continues to inspire our work today.

While we've come a long way, there's still more to do. Every barrier removed, every conversation started, and every act of advocacy helps create communities where everyone can participate, belong, and thrive.

💙 Happy Anniversary, ADA. Here's to continuing the work—together.

Missed our ADA Open House? Here’s a little sneak peek! 👀

One of the spaces we were most excited to share was our refreshed Showcase Bedroom.

From an adjustable bed and medication management tools to smart technology and everyday accessibility solutions, this space is designed to spark ideas that can make daily life a little easier and help people maintain their independence.

Whether you’re living with a disability, supporting an aging parent, or simply planning ahead, sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our ADA Open House! We loved sharing our refreshed Showcase Model Home with the community, and we’re excited to continue highlighting different spaces in the weeks ahead.

If you weren’t able to attend, we’d still love to show you around. Reach out to schedule a visit!

💙 Because accessibility isn’t just about today—it’s about creating spaces that work for all of us.

A BIG special thank you to Verlo Mattress of Green Bay for the generous donation of our adjustable bed, pillows and the bedding!

Video Description: A slow panoramic video of the updated Showcase Model Home bedroom at Options. The room features an adjustable bed, an over the table bed with a weighted stuffed animal on top, bedside furniture, an echo show, a showcase bathroom, a lighted mirror and other accessibility solutions designed to support comfort, safety, and independence. The video slowly pans across the room, highlighting the layout and features. An upbeat instrumental background music plays throughout. There is no spoken narration.

As we continue celebrating the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we're reminded that progress doesn't happen all at once.

The ADA has helped open doors to everyday life.

Whether it's going to work, attending school, visiting the doctor, eating at a restaurant, shopping, traveling, or enjoying a community event, the ADA has helped create more opportunities for people with disabilities to participate.

We've come a long way since 1990, but there's still work to do. Every conversation, every accommodation, and every act of advocacy helps build communities where everyone belongs.

💙 What accessibility feature, accommodation, or act of inclusion has made a difference in your life or someone else's?

We are officially one week away from Cooking Up Some Advocacy!

We’re getting ready for four days of cooking, self-advocacy, confidence-building, connection, and practicing everyday skills.

This program has been something we’ve been excited to bring to life, and we can’t wait to welcome our participants next week.

We still have a few spots available for young people with disabilities ages 15–23.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has only been around since 1990.

Think about that for a second.

How old were you in 1990?

For many of us, it's hard to imagine a time before accessible parking spaces, curb cuts, ramps, elevators, or the right to request reasonable accommodations at work or school. But those protections didn't always exist.

And here's something we're especially proud of...
In February 1990, months before the ADA became law, our own Assistant Director, Sandy Popp, traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for its passage.

She spent a week with other advocates, meeting with legislators across Capitol Hill, asking for their support of what would become one of the most important civil rights laws in our nation's history.

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law.

As we get ready to celebrate the ADA's 36th anniversary this week, we'll be sharing more about why this landmark law still matters—and why advocacy is important to continue today with our Open House Party on Thursday July 23rd, we hope you'll join us at Options from 4-6 pm.

💙 What year were you born? Were you alive when the ADA became law?
