The Saturday Blogroll Recap, June 6, 2026

Eighty-two years ago this very day, the Allied forces stormed Omaha Beach in the turning point of the Second World War. What you might not know is that only elevne photos survive from that attack - and that's only because a photographer took hundreds of shots, but because someone accidentally used the wrong development technique on the film rolls during development, only a few images could be saved from that battle....

Finalizing my Big Boy travel plans

Next Thursday will be a very chaotic day for me. But I'm hoping that chaos brings success. Next Thursday is the day that the Union Pacific 4014 engine, colloquially known as "Big Boy," will travel through Western New York. I've mapped out six different possible shooting locations, with a goal of getting images from at least three of those locales....

Happy 14th Anniversary, Sweet Brown

Imagine this. You're home at your apartment complex, and all of a sudden you smell smoke. You escape with your life. Thankfully, you are safe. A local news camera asks you about the situation, and while you're still upset over the whole ordeal, you tell the broadcast reporter the whole story. And a few weeks later ... well ... Let me introduce you to Sweet Brown....

Shooting for John Kucko next week

For more than 30 years, John Kucko was the heart and soul of the Rochester sports media. Whether it was a Rochester Amerks hockey game, or a Rochester RazorSharks basketball matchup, Kucko brought the action to Western New York viewers. At the same time, Kucko explored his enjoyment with digital photography. His "Sixty Seconds of Serenity" Facebook posts - photos of serene moments throughout the Finger Lakes and the Rochester area - helped people get through tough times....

The cost of running an independent blog

My good friend Roger Green posted last month on his blog about the behind-the-scenes cost of running and maintaining a personal weblog. I can tell you that, from personal experience, blog hosting does not operate for free. At least not GOOD blog hosting. When I escaped from the Times Union's blogfarm in 2017, I had to plunk down a good chunk of change to reserve not only a decent URL (chuckthewriter.blog), but also an independent WordPress hosting platform....

Everything is dangerous around a train

I'm a week and a half away from my train chase of the Union Pacific 4014 "Big Boy" in its first-ever trip to New York. I've mapped out several shooting locations, along with alternate spots in case my chosen spots are either too packed with other railfans, or my timing to chase the train is off. But I do need to let you know that being around any sort of train is dangerous....

Obsession – what the hell did I just see?

It's Saturday afternoon. I've taken some photos with some new camera gear, but I won't know how the photos turned out until the film is developed. No matter. I have other things to do. And I've heard a lot of word-of-mouth about this film Obsession. Sorry, I think Obsession and I think of that 1980's Animotion track. Yeah, I'm old....

The Saturday Blogroll Recap, May 30 2026

Last weekend in May, and probably the first decent weekend in a while for me. Lots of plans for photography this weekend, as I prepare for my Union Pacific 2014 "Big Boy" train chase. But before I do anything of the sort ... let's recap this week's blogroll, shall we? BLOGS FOR TRAVEL The Cawston Greenway blog, "Scorchio."...

C+C Music Factory, Freedom Williams, and the Atlanta Krunk

Pardon me for what might appear as a "shaggy dog" blog post, but after some recent news of late, I need to tell this story. A couple of days ago, there was an announcement of "The Great American State Fair," a 250th anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C. that would feature, among various singers and performers, such names as Morris Day and the Time, Milli Vanilli, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice, and several other late 80's / early 90's recording acts....

The Royale with Cheese TV Club: Fleabag

The Royale With Cheese Movie Club is a blog category where I finally get around to watching films that apparently everyone else in the world has seen. It was named after my finally seeing Pulp Fiction about 25 years after everyone else. Of late, I've added a TV subsection to this blog category, so at some point when I actually watch…...
