HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING

* WHAT...Heat index values of 95 to 100 expected.

* WHERE...Broome, Chemung, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, Southern Cayuga, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, and Yates Counties.

* WHEN...From noon today to 8 PM EDT this evening.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The hottest conditions will be in urban valley areas, where heat index values will climb above 95 degrees this afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms could provide relief from the heat during the late afternoon and evening.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

As National EMS Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to explain an important part of how Coventry EMS operates — ambulance billing.

Coventry EMS is an independent volunteer ambulance service. While we proudly serve the Town of Coventry and surrounding communities, we receive NO tax funding from the Town of Coventry to support our ambulance operations.

The cost of operating an EMS service continues to rise every year. Ambulances, medical equipment, medications, fuel, insurance, training, maintenance, and state/federal compliance requirements all come with significant expenses. Billing for services allows us to continue providing reliable emergency medical care to our community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The revenue generated through billing helps us:
• Maintain and replace ambulances and lifesaving equipment
• Purchase medications and medical supplies
• Support provider training and certification
• Cover insurance, fuel, and operational expenses
• Continue expanding services for our rural communities

Without ambulance billing, sustaining emergency medical services at the level our community deserves would simply not be possible.

We understand that receiving a bill after an emergency can sometimes be frustrating, but please know that billing is what helps keep your local EMS service available when you need us most.

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between the levels of care provided by ambulances in NY are?

(Lowest level of care to provide transport)

EMT’s (Emergency Medical Technician) attend a minimum of 150hrs spread over 3-6 months learning how to treat and care for sick and injured individuals.

AEMT’s (Advanced Emergency Medical Technician) attend 250-350hrs over 4-8 months building off of their EMT skills and adding in IV therapy and advancing their pharmacology set.

(Highest level of care for prehospital transport)

Paramedic’s attend 1200-1800hrs over 12-24 months and learn extensive pharmacology, pathology, deep dives into anatomy of the body and systems. Such as cardiology, respiratory therapy, and continuous care of the sick or injured until arrival at definitive care.

All certifications include classroom lecture, skill demonstrations, and riding with preceptors (mentors), many programs offer/require hospital rotations to gain real experience and the ability to practice the profession while in a controlled environment working along side their preceptors.

Once state certification is achieved, new providers undergo agency orientation, training, and a clearing process before being permitted to practice independently. Typical clearing processes may take several months, allowing the new provider time to build confidence while ensuring the agency can verify the provider’s ability to safely and effectively assess, treat, and transport patients independently.

EMS Week- Post 2

Did you know that the first “ambulances” were horse drawn buggies during the Napoleon wars?!

First aid teams in the US began forming through funeral homes and local groups. In the 1960’s pilot runs of EMT and Paramedic programs started. With the hype of the show Emergency in the 70’s fire departments and other community groups began forming ambulances utilizing hearse style vehicles with little to no more than bandaids and other basic first aid.

After the 70’s regulation and standards of care grew and became what they are today. At Coventry EMS we continuously train and prefect our knowledge. We strive for continued learning and trialing new equipment that we believe may be beneficial to not only patients but the safety of our crews.

It’s National EMS Week!

To celebrate, we’ll be sharing posts throughout the week highlighting our operations, equipment, and the history of EMS.

To start:

Coventry EMS operates as an independent organization out of the Coventry Volunteer Fire Company station through a joint housing agreement between Coventry EMS and Coventry Fire Company. Through this partnership, our ambulances are housed at the station while Coventry EMS independently owns and maintains all EMS apparatus and equipment.

Our fleet currently consists of two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle (flycar), and a specialized UTV Ambulance.

On 5/16, our crews were able to provide coverage for a contracted event while simultaneously responding with our secondary ambulance to a medical emergency. Both ambulances are rotated regularly to ensure balanced usage, operational readiness, and reliable service to the community.
