The Max, the myth, the legend… Introducing a horse that our Clinic Manager, Marlo, calls “a giant hunk of love.” Meet Maxwell, a Friesian/Warmblood cross! Previously a hunter/jumper show horse, Maxwell joined HYH in January 2026 for his second career as a therapy horse.

Maxwell is as regal and elegant as he looks, often considered the gentleman of the herd. We consider him the regulating and calming presence of his group of friends that we lovingly call “the Goon Squad,” keeping others grounded and maintaining a sense of order in the group. He is curious and can certainly be playful, but he usually prefers present as a kind, thoughtful, and gentle giant.

Maxwell is a very popular mental health and groundwork partner and is transitioning seamlessly into a trusted hippotherapy partner as well. You can often find him in sessions with our therapist Kayla, who has described Maxwell as a master of “tender moments” with clients, or in Paddock 2 with his good buddy Dash.

✨ Meet Angela! ✨

Angela has been volunteering with Hold Your Horses since June and helps out with Sunday morning barn chores. She moved to the Twin Cities recently and is pursuing her Master’s in Social Work at the University of Minnesota! We’re very grateful to have her as part of the HYH volunteer community.

A HUGE thank you to West Metro Equine and the University of Minnesota veterinary students for coming out today for dental exams. Our horses get their teeth taken care of while providing a great educational opportunity for the students, led by Dr. Sara Wefel.

Did you know that horses need to have their teeth “floated,” or filed down because they continue to grow throughout their lifetime? This process typically happens once per year for most of our horses. Our horses receive a full dental exam before special tools are used to help even out teeth as they wear over time and smooth over points or ridges.

Our team had a wonderful experience getting to know the students (though not pictured, the cats also loved meeting them too) and appreciate the time they took to provide education to some of our staff as well.

All horses are recovered and back to happily munching on their afternoon grain, hay, and grass!

Taking a moment to share the beautiful fall foliage that continues to ignite the land with colors. HYH is on 69 sprawling acres of pasture, trails, garden, and wetland. We look forward to continuing to incorporate more of the land into our programming!

We’d like to formally introduce you to one of the herd members who has joined us this year— Gibbs!

Gibbs joined the HYH team in January and is part Thoroughbred and part giant teddy bear. He absolutely loves people and will often choose human connection over grass. After spending much of his earlier life as a trail horse, Gibbs seems very happy with his current role, where being loved on and pampered is a significant part of the job. He has also been given many rave reviews about his extremely soft and boopable snoot.

Gibbs is very popular among our staff and volunteers as a partner for groundwork and mounted services because of his kind and loving nature. He has a big heart with lots of love to give. You may have even seen him on TV, featured in a segment about assisted living facility residents who came to visit the farm in April.

When Gibbs isn’t out with his boys (Maxwell, Dash, Remi, and Moose), he can most likely be found with one of this two favorite ladies: our mare Vivian, or our Program and Volunteer Manager, Sammy.

It takes a village to train a therapy horse! Our new horses go through a personalized “bootcamping” program designed to balance desensitization and exposure to new stimuli with building their confidence and learning their new jobs.

Each of our horses have moved at their own pace as our staff have introduced them to various toys and props that they may see in a mounted session with a client. In addition, our horses learn to safely approach our mounting ramp and become acclimated to volunteers and therapists walking alongside them and providing physical support for our clients.

This is led by our staff with years of experience with equine therapy programs, who spend countless hours per week with the herd and are able to best read their body language. Just like with our clients, we approach working with our new horses by exposing them to new things in a way that may push them out of their comfort zone, but not push so far that they shut down or become fearful.

The training continues once they begin working with clients to help further build their confidence and refine their skills. Here are just a few photos from our training sessions over the last several months!
