Have you ever wondered what happens to your body during a Sun Salutation?
A Sun Salutation A, or Surya Namaskar A in Sanskrit, is a series of connected poses that move more like a meditation than an exercise.
Let’s break it down a bit more, shall we?
💪 You build strength and length at the same time. Plank and Chaturanga work your upper body and core. Up Dog opens your chest while engaging your glutes and back. Down Dog gives your hamstrings, calves, and shoulders a real stretch.
🧘 Your spine gets a tune-up. The constant back-and-forth between forward folds and backbends decompresses the spine, works out imbalances in your posture, and keeps your vertebrae mobile and healthy.
🫀🫁 Your heart and lungs wake up. A few rounds in, your heart rate climbs and blood flow increases, making Sun Salutations a surprisingly effective aerobic warm-up.
🍽️ Your digestive system gets some love. The compression from forward folds, combined with deep belly breathing, actually massages your internal organs which supports digestion.
🧘 Your nervous system settles. This is the piece we find most powerful: every movement is tied to a breath. That rhythm signals your body to downshift. Your cortisol drops, your mental clarity rises, and you feel genuinely energized rather than depleted.
It’s a total body reset.
And that’s why we do 108 of them on the summer solstice.
One to symbolize each breath you will take this season 🌞
One to symbolize infinity, the never ending cycle of beginning again ♾️
📆 June 21. You won’t want to miss it.
