I got to the office early this morning and spent some time with my plant friends, including potting some fiddle leaf figs I propagated after aggressively trimming my super overgrown sparse plant. My old neighbor rescued the original tree from the curb and had it in their house for a while before passing it on to me. Since then it’s moved through a couple offices with me. It was at least 6 feet tall, you couldn’t miss this buddy.

Each winter it drops leaves and then each spring it grows back stragglier. After this last winter it looked really rough. I really thought it was going to die if I *didn’t* try something. So I cut off the few healthy green parts hoping to save what I could, while feeling approximately 87% sure I might be doing this plant in.

Instead? I ended up with new baby plant and sprouts popping out of the trunk I left behind. Those sprouts on the otherwise dead looking stick of a plant were a genuine surprise and brought me so much joy.

There’s probably a lesson here. Sometimes the scary thing isn’t taking the risk but staying the same when something clearly isn’t working. Sometimes what feels like cutting things back is actually making room for something new.

Or maybe the lesson is: go for it! get the bangs to heal your breakup? 😂 I don’t know. The lesson can be whatever you need it to be.

Grief is the strangest, least understood creature. It works in mysterious ways: making you cry or laugh at the drop of a hat from the most unexpected cues in the world around you. But if we let it, there is always room for grief. It asks to be felt and witnessed, not fixed.

I spotted Tastykakes in a grocery store this morning. They’re so common here now I honestly take them for granted, but there was a time when you could not find them outside of the Philadelphia area. My family literally used to mail them to me in college!
I’ll be honest, they don’t taste exactly like I remember. But I can’t tell if that’s a recipe change or just the absence of eating them straight out of my Gmom’s freezer, which is a pretty high bar to clear.
Something I think about a lot working in eating disorder recovery (and with folks recovering from diet culture in general) is how food is never just about calories or fuel. Food is memory, celebration, identity, history, geography, and family. Cutting out a regional food like this from your diet or calling it junk feels like cultural erasure, like losing a little piece of your story, which is tragically sad if you ask me.
So this is your reminder that there’s always room for your cultural foods. What snacks and foods are nostalgic for you?

We celebrated Teta’s work anniversary today with:
• Teta the gorilla (from *David Attenborough’s A Gorilla Story*)
• Savory pastries
• Silly games—therapy themed Mad Libs and a paper airplane contest

Team results:
🥇 1st: Kathleen & Jessie
🥈 2nd: Devin & Royall
🥉 3rd: Yolanta & Teta

Lots of laughs all around. We love Teta and love celebrating her in fun and slightly ridiculous ways 💛

Being a science person, I will always find animals to be amazing. My chemistry and biology undergrad mean I know how to keep a good stable aquarium. My kid’s betta fish needed medicine and while I was at the pet store, I saw this guy. I thought about this fishy all day and night and finally decided to go back the next day to see if he was still there, and he was! So we now have an office fish and he is stunning. Looking forward to keeping this nice little planted tank in my office. He has no name so whenever anyone asks his name, I just reply with that person’s name. Makeba asked and I said “I named him Makeba!”. I plan to continue doing this until someone catches on.
